Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) is a fully formed network of The, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, James Paget University Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn. This post is based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
At NNUH, the Transfusion lab processes approx. 60,000 samples per annum and provides a full 24/7 service to the hospital. The department has recently introduced new Grifols Erytra analysers and associated BTM middleware. Currently, the department uses Telepath LIMS and is looking to upgrade this. Haemonetics Blood Tracking system is in place for the control of blood fridges and bedside administration of components.
The post holder will be part of a larger network team led by the Network Blood Transfusion Manager, and supported by the EPA quality team.
The post holder will be expected to take the lead on daily IT tasks, laboratory IT issues and projects, which may require liaising with the IT leads at the other sites.
Advanced Health Care Scientist with experience and specialist knowledge in Transfusion Science and the requirements of the BSQR and ISO15189. To act as the IT lead for transfusion at NNUH and be responsible for the day-to-day management of IT related tasks, in addition to troubleshooting and managing larger projects. There may be a requirement to support in other areas within the service as required.
To meet standards required to achieve and maintain all aspects of BSQR standards as inspected by the MHRA and ISO 15189 as assessed by UKAS.
Ensures the Laboratory IT systems are functioning correctly in order to provide clear and appropriate reports in a format that allows the service users/clients access to accurate and updated patient care test results and traceability records.
As specialised staff, they will be required to train and demonstrate methodologies to medical staff, clinical scientists, other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students and medical laboratory assistants (MLA).

1. Communicates complex clinical scientific service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
2. Answers complex telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provides information that is highly complex about methodologies and service requirements.
3. Explains complex results and reassures the users that the information is correct when results do not agree with the clinical presentation and investigates.
4. Responsible for problem solving in their specialist field.
5. Manages own work and supervises day-to-day routine work in their specialised service.
