Winchester College is a boarding school for boys in Years 9 – 13. The Sixth Form welcomes girls and boys as day pupils and is preparing for the entry of girls as boarders when construction of two new boarding houses is complete. It was founded by William of Wykeham in 1382 and is one of the world’s most famous and distinguished schools. The School educates around 730 pupils. Position Overview
As Bursar and Clerk you will be a critical part of the leadership of Winchester, working closely with a range of exceptional people at leadership and Board level to determine and deliver Winchester’s financial and commercial priorities. This is a complex generalist remit spanning finance, IT, estates, investment management, property management, commercial development, procurement and risk management, leading a large and varied team operating at significant scale. This role also supports the Warden and Fellows (the Governing Body) as Clerk, whilst contributing as Bursar to a number of their Committees, including Finance, Investment, Development and Audit & Risk. The Bursar also plays a critical role, with the Headmaster, Elizabeth Stone, in shaping the College’s response to external pressures, such as the Government’s recent decision to apply VAT to school fees.
Qualifications
Applications are welcomed from highly capable senior leaders, with the requisite skillset to work at scale and lead a multi-functional team effectively. The person must be financially literate, with a strong commercial skillset and outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. It is likely that they will bring experience of having previously managed at least two of the functions overseen by this role. An interest in the development and education of young people will also be important.
