About DC Thomson: At DC Thomson we are a business with a purpose – to make a positive impact on the communities we serve. We are home to some of the world’s best loved media brands, organised around local news and radio, companionship, kids, advocacy, energy, puzzles and hobbies. The Courier, The Press and Journal, The Sunday Post, Beano, Stylist, Puzzler, The People’s Friend, My Weekly, bunkered, Energy Voice, Findmypast and Brightsolid are just some of the brands you might know us for. Deeply rooted in our communities, we are investing in data, technology and talent to unlock a new level of understanding about what really matters to our customers. This is how we are shaping the future of media. About the Role at The Press and Journal: The Press and Journal’s City and Shire Team takes a special focus on the regeneration of the region – from explaining the impact of council decisions both in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to highlighting the positive developments in our city and town centres, as well as the challenges they face. We cover the most important stories across the north-east, led by what matters most to our readers. Our coverage is broad and diverse, with each article tailored to a specific audience. This could be anything from planning applications and council reports produced in a timely fashion to colourful long-reads and in-depth investigations. It's a time of immense change in Aberdeen, with major projects at the beach taking place at the same time as historic work on Union Street and the construction of a new £40 million food hall on The Green. Our remit also includes crusading solutions-based journalism, such as our recent Common Sense Compromise campaign calling for a rethink on Aberdeen city centre bus gates. This galvanised the business community, attracted the support of 12,000 people and affected real change. But it's not all doom and gloom. We want to tell the success stories of our local businesses and individuals and promote the positives of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Our readers love positive stories, and we love writing them. Our Aberdeenshire readers are very important to us too and we take great care in highlighting community efforts all across the north-east. The team's coverage of the disastrous flooding in Ballater, a major project to revive Portsoy harbour and the revamp of Tarlair swimming pool are prime examples of that. Our work revolves around extensive collaboration with other teams within the company, as well as external organisations such as community councils, volunteer groups, Our Union Street, Aberdeen Inspired and more. We are now looking for a Reporter to join us to help fly the flag for the region. The right candidate must have good knowledge of the local area covering all of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, including the Banff and Buchan coast and all the way to Royal Deeside. Hyper-local stories that zero in on particular matters of local interest in our towns and villages are a crucial part of our remit. They will be passionate and well voiced in the issues facing the region and have good contacts willing to provide them with exclusives to deliver strong, engaging and in-depth coverage. Requirements Be a journalist with newsroom experience and able to demonstrate finding their own stories, and how to make them digitally optimised Have an interest and knowledge of the north-east of Scotland, the issues which affect it and the industries which support it Good knowledge of local politics and the workings of local authorities in Scotland Have a willingness to embrace new skills and tools in the digital arena such as SEO, social media, video, audio and more while maintaining a mindset of continuous learning and growth Ability to work in a team, collaborating on ideas and sharing responsibility for meeting newsroom targets Have highly-developed communication skills Detailed knowledge of the Editors' Code of Practice, GDPR and media law Have a full driving licence To apply for this role, please follow our online application process and submit a CV and cover letter. Benefits This is a full-time, permanent position, working 35 hours per week from our Aberdeen Office.
