The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is the department for economic growth. We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country.
The Office of the Pay Review Bodies (OPRB (previously called OME) is part of DBT and provides professional support to the eight independent pay review bodies that make recommendations to Ministers on levels of public sector pay – over £100 billion of spending annually.
The Review Body on Senior Salaries (SSRB) advises on the remuneration of senior civil servants, senior armed forces officers, the judiciary, senior health service managers and chief police officers. Its recommendations must be based on an authoritative assessment of a range of issues and evidence bearing on the challenges of recruiting and retaining these senior leaders.
The SSRB is about to undertake the next Major Review of the Judicial Salary Structure for the Lord Chancellor. This fundamental review of the pay structure of the judiciary, the first since 2017-18, is likely to take 18 months or more and report in the spring/summer of 2026.
The Review will be led by the SSRB’s lead member for the judiciary on behalf of the whole SSRB supported by its own secretariat, which you will support. It will be a stimulating and rewarding task: the judiciary faces significant recruitment shortfalls and there are considerable backlogs in the courts – it is important that the review can develop proposals for future remuneration that respond to these challenges while giving the taxpayer value for money. You will also support on the SSRB’s advice in its next annual report on a 2025 pay uplift for the judiciary.
The organisation is based in central London and attendance at all-day in-person meetings will be necessary. These may be more than once a week in the busiest few months of the year.
As a Project Officer for the Major Review into Judicial Salary Structure, you will support the Secretariat to deliver the report, this will include:
* Supporting the production of the report and recommendations through contributing to the review and summary of evidence and drafting of the report for publication, as well as detailed checking and proof-reading and liaison with the commercial printer.
* Supporting the delivery of the report through a variety of project management skills, identifying and monitoring risks, engaging with written and oral evidence and coordinating commissions.
* Working closely with external stakeholders such as the Ministry of Justice, Judicial Office and Judicial Appointments Commission.
* Organising and accompanying Judicial Sub-Committee members on a selection of visits, joining members in discussion group sessions with representatives of the remit group, and making a record of the visit.
* Overseeing the administration of Judicial Sub-Committee meetings, including drafting and finalising accurate minutes of Judicial Sub-Committee meetings and maintaining the meeting action log.
* Ensuring that sub-committee members are updated on policies relating to their fees and travel expenses, overseeing and agreeing members’ claims in respect of these other information requirements.
* Oversight and maintenance of the Major Review file area on SharePoint and Judicial Sub-Committee members’ access to this.
