Director of Internal Audit - Finance, Planning and Data Insight section
Do you have experience of delivering an effective internal audit service? Are you able to communicate complex issues clearly, negotiate and influence others? Do you have experience of leading and directing the work of an audit team? Could this be your next challenge? Full details about this exciting opportunity are contained within the job pack.
The Role
We are looking for a skilled and experienced internal auditor to lead a small and dedicated team responsible for providing an effective, efficient and well-regarded internal audit service to the University of Essex and the University of Suffolk under a cost sharing arrangement.
While for routine operational purposes, the Director of Internal Audit reports to the Chief Financial Officer, the Internal Audit team is independent with a reporting line to the Chairs of the Audit and Risk Management Committees of Essex and Suffolk. The Committees, independently, approve prioritisation and allocation of the work of Internal Audit.
Duties of the Director include planning, coordinating and overseeing the work of the team, reporting to the Committees and carrying out a range of audits in line with agreed procedures and applicable professional standards to specified deadlines. This involves identifying and agreeing cost-effective and practical solutions to address any control weaknesses, and researching and interpreting the implications of professional and sector developments on internal audit.
A full list of duties and responsibilities can be found within the attached job pack.
About you (Skills and qualifications required)
You will need to be a fully qualified internal auditor or CCAB qualified accountant with evidence of continuing professional development.
Proven practical experience of internal auditing is essential as is the capacity to work autonomously and on your own initiative to meet deadlines and objectives. You will need excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to negotiate with and influence others.
You will be able to operate confidently in a complex and changing environment with the ability to analyse, interpret and clearly communicate complex issues to academic and professional colleagues.
What we can offer
We currently offer a generous package including hybrid working with a mix of on-site and remote working (see job pack for details) and onsite parking when attending our Colchester campus with expenses paid for visits to the University of Suffolk. Generous holiday entitlement of 28 days, pro rata for part-time staff (plus a further 8 bank holidays and an extra 3 days when closed during the Christmas period).
The University will support Professional Development, utilising the apprenticeship levy where available.
About the team/Section
The prime responsibility of the Internal Audit team is to provide the University's Council and senior management with assurance on the adequacy and effectiveness of the University's risk management, control and governance arrangements. The team is attached to the Finance, Planning and Data Insight Section which is part of the University's Professional Services, and the remit covers all areas of work that the University undertakes, whether in academic departments or professional services, and covers all campuses. The team has the same prime responsibility to the University of Suffolk's Board providing the same service for an agreed number of days a year under a shared services agreement. Within the University of Suffolk, the team is attached to the Finance and Planning Directorate and works closely with the University Secretary who is Secretary to the University's Board.
At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.
To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
