An opportunity has arisen in our General Surgery Team.
Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor. The successful candidate will join the existing General Surgical Department at Prince Charles Hospital. The post will have a general surgical emergency 'on call' commitment on a 1:10 basis. This post is fixed term for up to 2 years, covering a career break.
This post will join the team of consultants responsible for the provision of general surgical services to Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. The Post will be based at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, but may also be required to undertake sessions across other sites within the organisation.
Main duties of the job
The post will be required to share with Consultant colleagues the responsibility of providing General Surgical outpatient and inpatient care for the local population and in doing so foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical Department.
The General Surgery Department has supportive Consultants and a successful track record of facilitating the SAS/Specialty Doctor's to progress to CESR. Any successful candidate will have a great opportunity to have guidance from the candidates who have already obtained CESR or from those who are now in the CESR process.
Job responsibilities
You will provide a clinical service in conjunction with your colleagues and under the direction of Consultant General Surgeons, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
You will be required to adhere to the principles of good medical practice laid down in the guidance of Good Medical Practice issued by the General Medical Council.
The post holder will be involved with the examination and treatment of new patients in the department and will also assist in the review clinics.
The post holder will participate in an on-call rota (1:10) with resident on-call shifts out of hours.
You will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.
You will be required to participate in the LHBs risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Trust. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.
You will be required to participate in the LHBs Appraisal Scheme in conjunction with your Supervising Consultant, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in personal and professional development to fulfill Royal College CME requirements.
You will provide advice to clinicians in hospital and primary care, originating either from telephone calls or ward referrals.
You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
You will be required to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Trusts policy.
Travel as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required. Travelling between hospitals/clinic sites may be required to undertake duties. In exceptional circumstances it may also be necessary to undertake duties at other locations with the UHB.
Subject to the terms and conditions of service the post holder will be expected to observe policies and procedures of the LHB drawn up in consultation with the professions, where they involve clinical matters.
The successful candidate would be working at ST / registrar level within the Department of General Surgery, Colorectal and Upper GI Surgery. The post would offer regular outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and registrar on-call duties (1 in 10). A Flexible Weekly timetable, which would include on average 2-3 theatre sessions, 1-2 outpatient clinic sessions.

* Full GMC/GDC Registration
* MRCS or recognised equivalent
Experience
* Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
* Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
* Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS working practices and systems.
* Experience of research in general surgery topics
Skills and abilities
* Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
* Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from more senior doctors as appropriate
* Ability to manage own time and work load
* Experience of assessing surgical emergencies
* Able to work as a member of a team or on own
* Good verbal and written communication skills
* Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to communicate sensitively with patients, relatives and staff
* Experience of research in general surgery topics
