RBH is located on the south coast, close to the New Forest in the east and the Jurassic coastline in the west. This is a major tourist area, and during the summer months, over one million holidaymakers visit Bournemouth, including substantial numbers of foreign language students. The fluctuating population, three times greater growth than the average for England and Wales, and the high proportion of elderly present special issues for health care.
Eye Unit
This purpose-built unit opened in April 2000 and includes a 9-bed inpatient ward (including 3 paediatric beds) together with Eye Theatres and an Outpatient Department which includes a One Stop Cataract Clinic and Glaucoma Clinics. We have established a streamlined investigations facility in Poole which allows for virtual clinics in both macular and glaucoma in addition to expanded cataract assessment facilities. Almost 34,000 patients per year are seen in eye clinics, and a further 10,500 benefited from urgent or emergency treatment. Surgeons in the Eye Unit perform around 4,500 cataract operations every year.
