Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Band 7 Advanced Dietitian who has an interest in working with people with Mental Health conditions and Learning Disabilities.
The post holder will split their working week between the Mitford unit based on the Northgate Park site in Morpeth and the Community Treatment Teams in Northumberland and North Tyneside.
The Mitford unit is a highly specialist inpatient service for adults who are on the autism spectrum, who have extremely complex needs and display challenging behaviours. This is an exciting opportunity to continue to develop the service within our Autism Inpatients Clinical Business Unit. The post will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team on the wards to provide expert dietetic support for patients with autism and learning disabilities, training the staff team and be involved at a senior level within the business unit to help manage nutritional issues with these patients.
The Community Treatment Teams provide assessment and treatment by a multi-disciplinary team. The team provides a service for adults who are experiencing difficulty with their mental health and require a period of assessment and treatment.
Main duties of the job
You will take a lead role in providing expert dietetic input to prioritise work in the clinical area and determine clinical intervention and management. You will be responsible for management and clinical supervision of dietitians and support workers who work with you and provide expertise in dietetics and nutrition to patients and other health professionals. You will also be given the opportunity to work on service development and lead on Trust wide projects (for example Audit of the Nutrition policy, Outcome measures)
You will receive full support from the Trustwide Dietetic Professional Manager and Team leads as well as the Advanced Dietitians working in other specialist areas. We hold regular peer supervision, journal sessions and training sessions to ensure our practice is up to date and supported.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Degree in Dietetics or Science/Nutrition Degree plus post-graduate Diploma in Dietetics
* Current valid registration as a Dietitian with the HCPC
* Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses and other relevant CPD to Masters level
* Member of the BDA and Mental Health Specialist Group
* BDA: Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group (PENG) course
* Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable adults training
* CBT training
Knowledge and Experience
* Post registration experience in a variety of dietetic specialities
* Knowledge, experience and evidence of working with people with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and those with eating disorders
* Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
* Experience working in and presenting to groups
* Experience in the development of Dietetic services and participation in audit/research
* Experience of providing clinical supervision and mentoring students
* A working knowledge of vulnerable adult and child protection issues and the Mental Health Act
* Knowledge of existing national guidance and key standards in eating disorders and current issues relating to nutrition
* Experience of using mindfulness techniques and CBT
* Experience of presenting on Dietetic issues in mental health at a National level
Skills and Competencies
* The ability to solve complex clinical problems some of which will require immediate resolution
* Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance as part of the supervision process
* Ability to be flexible; adapting approaches to suit different settings and patients
