Advanced Biomedical Scientist- Haematology
TheDepartment of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit experienced AdvancedBiomedical Scientists in Haematology to help shape, deliver and improve theservice we deliver to our patients. This is a great time to join one of thelargest Pathology departments in the country, and in advance of moving to ournew purpose designed Pathology building (on the St. Jamess UniversityHospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on the Leeds GeneralInfirmary site).

Main duties of the job
Thesuccessful candidate will be a key member of the Blood Sciences managementteam. Reporting to the Service Leads, they will be responsible for theoperational delivery of a 24/7 Haematology and Coagulation service across theTrust, supported by the wider management team and other key scientific andclinical staff. The successfulcandidate will play a significant role in the delivery of two new BloodSciences laboratories, one of which will be a regional hub.
Candidatesmust be registered with the HCPC, hold an MSc (or level 7 equivalent) andhave significant and recent experience in the discipline of Haematology andCoagulation. Experience of working atthis level in a similar role, of leading large teams, of qualitymanagement/service improvement and of laboratory automation would beadvantageous for this senior role.

OurPathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals inthe Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million andprovide services both regionally and nationally. In addition to the newlaboratory projects, we are also working to deploy a West YorkshireAssociation of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) regional LIMS, and a new ManagedPathology Service Contract. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospitalis also about to start, which will include all in-patient maternity andspecialist neonatal services to become the largest single site maternitycentre in the UK.
BloodSciences has a very engaged multi-disciplinary senior team and awell-developed quality management system. The successful candidate will bewell supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The Blood SciencesDepartment is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratoryin both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology

Job responsibilities
Toundertake highly specialist clinical technical investigations for thediagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease. This will require the complexanalysis, interpretation and comparison of clinical samples.
Toco-ordinate, validate and authorize the day to day technical activities of asection of the laboratory
Toensure the training of technical, scientific and medical staff within area ofspecialist responsibility
Tolead where appropriate in quality activities such as audit, EQA review, validation, change and risk management.
Tocommunicate highly complex and / or sensitive information to colleagues andother healthcare staff.
Tolead and be accountable for a section of the laboratory discipline includinginvolvement with HR procedures and deputising for more senior staff whereappropriate.
Inorder to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will havesuccessfully studied for a relevant degree, relevant masters degree, IBMSHigher Specialist Diploma, or equivalent qualification at Level 7 and be aHCPC registered healthcare scientist. A
In addition you will have extensiveexperience within the speciality or related discipline. You will havedeveloped a range of competencies and specialist knowledge within thediscipline through extensive practical experience, in house training andstructured study and will continue to develop your skills and knowledgesubject to the requirements of continuous professional development (CPD).
Tofulfil your people governance responsibilities you will be required toundergo appropriate HR training, for example, in supervisory management. As asenior staff member you will be required to assist in the general managementof the department, for example in areas such as basic HR functions,appraisal, incident investigation etc..
