Job Purpose:
Lawson Fuses Limited (LFL) is seeking an ‘Apprentice Test / Laboratory technician’ for its headquarters located in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. This is a key role and is required to assist the R&D team in performing a variety of technical product and material tests and measurements within the Lawson Fuses Laboratory.

Job Dimensions:
This is a full-time role based in our Newcastle upon Tyne plant with four days on-site and one day attending a local college studying a related qualification. This role reports to the R&D Manager and will work closely with R&D Engineers including Materials, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers. The role will be to assist the R&D team to implement product roadmap strategies and provide technical support for internal teams in the UK and India.
Key activities of this role will include:
1. Pressure testing of ceramic barrels – understand expected pressure, record results.
2. Tensile testing – crush testing and pull testing of ceramic barrels, fuse assemblies, and general sub-assemblies.
3. Thermal shock – heating of ceramic barrels and controlled placement into cold water and dye penetration testing to review microscopic cracks in ceramic.
4. Set up, assembly, and operation of electrical tests to validate the operation of a fuse.
o Each of the above tests require a formal report to be written in MS Word that can be circulated to internal and external stakeholders.
5. Understand and utilise various pieces of electrical/electronic equipment including volt meters, current meters, current sensors, thermocouples, and electronic thermometers.
6. Understanding technical standards.
7. Reading and understanding technical drawings generated with AutoCAD.
8. Cleaning, preventive maintenance, and assistance with repair of all test equipment.
9. Use of MS Excel to record data and control of documents such as calibration.
Key Accountabilities:
* Comply with health and safety policies and procedures, risk assessments, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), manual handling, emergency procedures.
* Maintain excellent housekeeping, in accordance with organisation Standard Procedures.
* Order and control stocks of laboratory materials where required.
* Prepare for, and perform, laboratory experiments, tests or tasks following any specified methodologies to provide reliable, accurate data.
* Demonstrate technical competence in the use of specified instruments and equipment.
* Report faults and seek diagnostic advice to maintain equipment in good working order, including calibration where required.
* Complete documentation proficiently.
* Keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.
* Contribute to the preparation of reports.
* Use simple statistical techniques for data presentation and evaluation.
* Demonstrate problem-solving techniques including identification of sources of error and how they can be reduced e.g. human error.
* Use standard software packages and applications e.g. Microsoft Office suite.
* Identify relevant information from scientific sources e.g. supervisors, literature etc. in order to contribute to solutions.
* Evaluate data, recognise and call attention to failed tests.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
Minimum:
* Good GCSE or A level results (Depending on age).
* Willingness to learn.
* Understanding of how important it is to follow health and safety guidelines.
* Some computer skills with Microsoft Office.
