The Yorkshire Museum is one of the UK’s oldest museums and houses designated, nationally-significant collections of Archaeology, Numismatics, Biology and Geology. These collections underpin a varied, audience-focused exhibition programme, as well as being at the heart of many research collaborations. We are seeking a Senior Curator to develop and deliver the exhibition programme, guide curatorial projects and lead the Yorkshire Museum curatorial team in collections care, management, development, interpretation and research. The role will be a figurehead for the museum and its collections, representing them both internally and externally.
The post will report to the Head of Collections and Research, and will work within a collections leadership group alongside our Registrar, Senior Curator (York Art Gallery) and Senior Curator (York Castle Museum). They will have three direct reports and a wider team of six people.
You will have expert knowledge of at least one of the Yorkshire Museum’s collections. You will also have significant collections management and care expertise, alongside strong knowledge of museological practice. Your skills will include leadership and team management, and you will be a strong communicator. You will be creative, and able to identify novel solutions to the unusual challenges and possibilities thrown up in museums. These skills will be based upon significant experience of exhibition development, project and budget management and collections projects. We expect that the successful candidate will also align with our values; Curious, Creative, Generous, Responsible and Supportive.
