Description Job Title Industrial Placement Naval Ships Mechanical Engineer Location Scotstoun (Glasgow) Start Date 23rd June 2025 BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Industrial Placement programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager. Salary £23,100 We design and build a full range of naval ships from offshore patrol vessels through to giant aircraft carriers, giving customers the capability to fulfil extensive naval operations around the world. What you will be doing As an Undergraduate, you will be involved in the design, development and testing of complex mechanical systems and turning ideas into products. You will learn how to generate concept ideas and turn them into viable solutions, gaining experience of 3D modelling and analysis tools that will help you factor in considerations including materials, manufacture, assembly, cost and performance. As a Mechanical Engineer you will be the one who turns ideas into products. You will be involved in the design, development and testing of the complex mechanical systems. In the early stages of a project, you will apply scientific principles and technical information to generate concept ideas. After this you will select the most suitable design and turn it into a viable solution. Through 3D modelling and a range of analysis tools, you will create a detailed design of the product that factors into considerations such as materials, manufacture, assembly, cost and performance to name just a few. Our military and commercial programmes require us to push our capabilities and technologies to the limit of what is achievable today. Duties and Responsibilities • Capturing and analysing requirements in order to understand the customer/business needs and the context in which the system will be used. • Supporting the design and optimisation of system architectures and solutions using system modelling techniques. • Facilitating successful integration of systems and sub-systems. • Identifying and mitigating failure modes. • Supporting the identification of safety hazards and the assessment and mitigation of safety risk. • Creating high quality written reports and calculations to back up engineering decisions. Skills As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Engineering or Marine Engineering (Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing or with another allied subject is also acceptable) To be considered for this role you must be returning to university to complete your degree.
