Venterra’s Geoscience team is made up of market-leading experts from Ordtek, GDG, and Partrac. We offer unparalleled site characterisation, geoscience management, sediment processes, UXO management, and GIS and data services, tailored to meet the comprehensive needs of our clients.
Role Description:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Operations Geophysicist to join our dynamic team within Venterra’s Geoscience service line. This key role focuses on supporting successful delivery of high-quality geophysical survey products and data interpretation for offshore wind farm projects at all stages of development. You will ensure that project deliverables meet quality standards while adhering to budget, timeline, and resource guidelines.
The role will provide opportunities to explore and appraise the application of pioneering technologies to address project needs and develop and contribute to best practices and innovation.
Primarily based in one of our Geoscience member company offices in Hethel (Norwich), Newcastle or Hamburg, we offer hybrid working, with employees spending three days per week in the office, providing flexibility and promoting work-life balance.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide clear leadership and task coordination within the team, assigning responsibilities that play to individual strengths and competencies.
* Provide input to survey and site investigation strategies, aligning survey methodologies with site conditions and geohazard risks.
* Critically appraise existing geophysical datasets and assess usability against project requirements, provide commentary on limitations and factors which may impact future data acquisition.
* Design and review scopes of work and technical specifications for offshore surveys.
* Critically evaluate tender documents and support clarifications on behalf of clients.
* Contribute to the review of survey contractors project execution plan (PEP and supporting documents) before on-site activities commence.
* Attend site/vessel and project kick-off meetings where required.
* Be active in managing survey contractors and client representatives to ensure the delivery of high-quality data from offshore survey campaigns.
* Perform Quality Assurance and support Interpretation of geophysical datasets (multibeam echosounder, side scan sonar, magnetometer/gradiometer, sub-bottom profiler and multi-channel seismic) as part of a wider team, integrate with existing data and site knowledge and identify seabed and subsurface hazards.
* Process/reprocess geophysical data sets as required using industry standard software packages provide deliverables to produce charts and input to reports.
* Quality check contractors’ data, interpretation and reporting deliverables and provide review commentary and actions for improvement.
* Communicate the results of any survey in a clear fashion to the team, clients, senior managers, or partners, including those with a limited understanding of geoscience. This includes presenting findings at meetings and presentations.
* Keep abreast of new and emerging technologies and methodologies.
* Provide evaluation commentary on data collection techniques and support improvements in existing techniques in data acquisition and processing.
* Provide support, technical advice, and guidance to project teams, client and other project stakeholders.
* Oversee the production of and contribute to technical reporting, leading teams to deliver thorough and comprehensive project documentation.
We are looking for candidates with both practical operational experience and relevant background academic knowledge. Candidates should possess most of the following skills and experience.
* A minimum of five years of relevant work experience in marine geophysical survey campaigns (on behalf of contractor, consultant or a developer). This experience should include expertise in marine geophysical survey data acquisition and processing techniques, as well as an understanding of geotechnical and seabed sampling techniques.
* Demonstratable experience with industry standard Geophysical data QC, processing and interpretation packages and workflows, in particular: Oasis Montaj with relevance to UXO related surveys, Experience with other software packages should also be detailed in your application.
* Understanding of the offshore energy industry, and its survey and site investigation needs at different stages of the project lifecycle.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Proven experience in managing and ensuring data quality.
* Ability to work autonomously.
* The ability and willingness to travel occasionally for short durations to support project needs (e.g. to contractor, or client offices) for project and fieldworks kick-off, progress and debrief meetings.
Education/Qualifications:
* Degree in Geophysics, Geology, Geoscience, or another relevant field.
* Desired Masters in Geophysics, Geology, Geoscience, or another relevant field.
Additional Requirements:
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Mentoring and coaching skills.
* Experience with Python scripting and automation.
* Willing and able to travel as required.
