An exciting opportunity has opened up to join the dynamic Acute Medicine team at Princess Royal University Hospital. The team are actively seeking to review and develop the acute services in line with the changing demand. We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will join a team of 10 Consultants in developing and delivering acute care provision. The team promote best practice in the management of emergency medical admissions, discharges and admission avoidance.
The successful candidate will join an existing team of Acute Medicine Consultants working across the Acute Medicine services at the Princess Royal University Hospital. There is also the potential for prospective candidates to develop their speciality interest as part of their acute job role. This is dependent on informal agreement before formal application. The expanded team will progress the development of Acute Medicine and Same day emergency care service within the PRUH and South Sites Division. This include the ongoing development of Ambulatory Emergency Care and Acute Medical Unit re-design, seven-day acute medical model to improve patient safety, continuity of care experience and good clinical outcome.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for covering range of clinical duties and this will include patients care on Acute Medical Wards and in the Medical Ambulatory unit.
As an Acute Physician you will be providing consultant led care for patients based on the Acute Medical Units. The Units are two modern purpose-designed wards in very close proximity to the Emergency Department and consists of 56 beds including 8 monitored beds. Consultant ward rounds are conducted every morning with a second round in the afternoon in line with acute medicine standards. Multi-disciplinary board rounds take place twice a day with speciality in-reach for advice. Successful candidates would also participate in the on call medical take rota.
Consultant led Medical Ambulatory Unit is open 7 days a week and accepts referrals directly from GPs, Urgent Care, LAS, NHS 111 and the Emergency Department. The unit also sees step down patients from the Acute Medical Units that require rapid follow up or further treatment following discharge from hospital. We are currently expanding this service to take more patients from the acute medical take and directly from the community.

GENERAL
The remit of the post holder will be to work within the multidisciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients under the Acute Medicine. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group, take on appropriate specific responsibilities as part of their core Supporting Professional Activity ( infection control, risk and performance management, consultant and junior rota supervision, teaching programme, mortality monitoring, audit, speciality liaison) while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff and students.
Major areas of Acute Medicine in Kings include the interface with Emergency Medicine, other medical specialties and community care providers. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of all aspects of the service but our priorities are to continue working towards provision of recognised outstanding patient safety, quality of care, patient experience and reducing waste, and our focus is on the expansion of ambulatory assessment and management of our patients with appropriate clinically lead pathway design.

PURPOSE OF JOB
The post will be based at the Princess Royal University Hospital and the proposed 10 PA Job Plan is attached. This will be reviewed within 3 months of the postholder commencing in post. The job plan is based on the provision of a Consultant delivered service seven days a week and into the evening in accordance with principles of Acute Medicine endorsed by the Royal College of Physicians and NHS England (London).

The On-Call commitment is for a 1:10 rota, which is classed as Category A. There is a commitment to undertake routine job planned work on Saturdays or Sundays as part of the total job planned PAs.
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Together with the other Acute Medicine Consultants, to provide a service for Acute Medicine. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
2. Shared responsibility with the other Acute Medicine and contributing GIM Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for AM on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Divisional management team.
6. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/ Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
12. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
13. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
14. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
