We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Director to join our team.
Our new management team structure presents a dynamic environment, where the Technical Director will play a pivotal role in helping to lead the company forward, aligning technical excellence with business objectives and growth.
The successful candidate will be an experienced manager with extensive expertise in both Civil and Structural design engineering. In this role, they will lead a team of 14 engineers and technicians, offering technical guidance and support while helping to shape and communicate the company’s vision, values, and strategic direction. Their efforts will contribute to driving sustainability, fostering growth, enhancing efficiency, and ensuring profitability whilst providing technical support, steering the company towards continued success and long-term growth.
What you will do
In our team you will have responsibility for upholding our recently launched in-house technical standards, ensuring that we comply fully with all local and national legislation and ensuring all our designs remain commercial, buildable and safe.
Implements strategic direction and management to projects, in varied sectors, from a technical perspective, from lessons learned, successes, tools, best practices and cross-pollination.
Key responsibilities in the role include:
* Lead and manage the engineering team on a day-to-day basis
* Interpret Technical Requirements of tenders
* Create procedures and monitor use
* Identify new or emerging software or where improvements can be made
* Approve outgoing drawings, reports etc.
* Provide technical input into bids/submissions
* Provide technical support
* Identify technical skills gaps
* Identify training requirements and CPD opportunities
* Assess technical/commercial risks to Portland
* Oversee software maintenance, ensuring all design software remains fit for purpose
* Ascertain client feedback
* Monitor for any changes in legislation alongside updates to technical standards and codes of practice.
* Design co-ordination
* Check and approve calculations & reports prior to issue
* Report all technical matters at Management meetings
* Write specialist reports
* Assist with bid writing and fee letters
* Drive business development and identify opportunities for growth to expand the company’s client base and market presence
* Be responsible for driving efforts to bring in new projects and opportunities
* Work in alignment with our business plan, contributing to the achievement of our strategic goals and ensuring the continued growth
* Attend networking events
* Manage a small team of engineers/technicians whilst also being technical for the whole office
* Implement and monitor new protocols within the team
* Maintain and manage the recent launch of our drawing office manual and standardisation.
What you will have
In addition to having a confident, commercial and professional outlook you will need to have:
* Chartered Membership or Associate Membership of the ICE or IStructE
* High level of technical understanding with the ability to communicate this knowledge clearly – verbally and in writing
* Demonstrated effective problem-solving and decision-making skills
* Strong communication, analysis, technical design and drawing skills
* A self-motivated team player with good people skills and experience of managing & mentoring a team
* Excellent people management and networking skills
* A wide range of project experience
