Role Description: Trustee (Finance) – initial term 3 years
Background: A background in all or some of these areas: Business, accounting, banking, or Governance.
Role Summary: To add to the Trustee board the skills obtained from business and support them to form the strategic direction. Trustees have and must accept ultimate responsibility for directing Mentor Link, ensuring it is solvent, well-run, and delivering the outcomes for which it has been set up.
Main Responsibilities:
1. To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
2. To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
3. To ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects.
4. To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
5. To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
6. To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
7. To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
8. To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
9. To appoint the chief executive officer and monitor his/her performance.
10. Supporting and advising on the business model of the charity.
11. Scrutiny of charity finances at Trustee meetings and Annual accounts and presentation to the AGM.
12. Advising the board on financial decisions and budgets including payroll and service charges.
13. Examining financial reports to the board to support the board's understanding of the charity’s financial position and setting strategic direction on financial matters relating to the charity.
Qualities of a Trustee:
Essential:
* Business/finance/banking/governance. Demonstrated leadership and management, communication, and presentation skills. Experience of business, commerce, or industry.
* Team player who will contribute on a range of broader issues to the work of the Board.
Desirable:
* Experience of working within the charitable, voluntary, and public sector. Understanding of the education/mental health/health sector.
Time Commitment:
In addition to Board meetings, you may be required to attend occasional training events. Board meetings are one half termly session, 2-3 hours in the evening.
