The Science Department at Salesian
The Science Department has a successful track record at GCSE and A-level. It is enthusiastic and progressive, with a focus on teaching and learning, and a commitment to science specialism at GCSE and A-level. Our results are outstanding: last year, 74% of students achieved a GCSE in Combined Science between grades 9-5, with a subject progress score of +0.7. Triple Science results are also excellent, with 85% achieving 7+ in Chemistry, 91% in Biology, and 93% in Physics. Each triple science subject achieved a progress score above +1.0. At Key Stage 5, our Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses have high uptake and excellent results, with many classes and CPD opportunities for staff.
The department comprises 15 specialist science teachers and 5 technicians, all dedicated to enhancing science education across the school. We value strong relationships and mutual support within the team.
The department is led by the Head of Science, overseeing Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and KS3/4 coordinators. At KS3, students are taught in mixed ability groups; at KS4, ability sets are used, but high expectations for all remain. We teach GCSE Combined Science and Separate Sciences (AQA), with dedicated teachers for each science at KS4 and KS5, offering a broad curriculum and professional development opportunities.
The department is well-equipped, with 7 labs, a new science lecture theatre, SMART boards, and a set of iPads to enhance teaching and learning. Lessons are collaboratively planned to deliver a mastery science curriculum.
Extra-curricular activities include a KS3 Science Club, visits to Science Museum, CERN, Marwell Zoo, and Royal Holloway, as well as field courses for A-level Biology students. Students are also entered into Olympiads to stretch the more able.
We are committed to teacher training, hosting SCITT and PGCE trainees, and welcoming ECTs, valuing their ideas and creativity.
The successful candidate will have a passion for science and teaching, the ability to inspire, and a commitment to student achievement. This role offers the chance to work within a strong department, across all age ranges including Sixth Form.
We are proud of our department and look forward to welcoming a colleague who shares our passion for Science.
Salesian School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults. The successful applicant will require an enhanced DBS check.
