We are looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated, and forward-thinking individual for this exciting role in Paediatric radiotherapy.
As a Paediatric Staff Nurse you will work closely with the senior Nursing team to provide nursing care for children under 16 years who are undergoing radiotherapy. You will care for patients requiring General anaesthetic for treatment. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of specialists within the Paediatric Multidisciplinary team.
We work closely with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and all children under 16 years will receive joint care within the two Trusts thus ability to communicate across both centres will be vital.
Applicants will be working as part of a national service which offers PBT and radiotherapy to patients across the UK.
Note; this is a fixed term 1 year contractFull time 37.5 hrs
You will deliver Nursing care to Paediatric patients at the Christie hospital. See JD for full list of duties which include;
• To be aware of the patients needs, both physical and psychological whilst ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained.
• To be aware of the needs of relatives, and to give them support, advice and direct them to most appropriate supporting agencies.
• Perform comprehensive assessment of patient care needs.
• Plan, implement and evaluate care according to changing health care needs.
• Collect and evaluate report information and maintain accurate patient records, to enable effective care delivery.
• Involve the multidisciplinary team and where possible patients, carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
• Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and the multidisciplinary care team.
• Seek/act on advice from a senior team member or relevant other, as appropriate.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres and the PBT centre is one of two high-energy NHS proton centres in the UK offering proton therapy to patients that would previously have travelled abroad for treatment. As such this is a role, working in a highly specialised service alongside an extensive multi-professional team able to treat a complex clinical case mix including a high proportion of paediatric and young adult patients.
The PBT centre is a day case, outpatient service and operates routinely Monday – Friday with occasional planned weekend working. Individuals are required to work shift patterns to ensure adequate cover of the service across the day which operates from early morning - evenings. The PBT service is committed in supporting staff to find ways in which they can work flexibly in order to find an appropriate work life balance.
As a novel and highly specialised service there is extensive opportunity to continually develop within this role and ample funding is available for ongoing professional development of all post holders as well as opportunities to attend relevant conferences as a representative of the profession, department and Trust. PROFESSIONAL
• Maintain active status on professional register.

• To be aware of the patients needs, both physical and psychological whilst ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained.
• To welcome patients and introduce them to the ward routine and ensure they receive the most age appropriate welcome booklet.
• To be aware of the needs of relatives, and to give them support, advice and direct themn to most appropriate supporting agencies.
• To give and receive the report at change over of duties and ensure handover sheet is updated at each shift.
• Ensure that prescribed drugs and treatments are stored and administered correctly and in accordance with the Hospital Procedure and Policy.
• Correct care and custody of controlled drugs is observed at all times.
• To liaise with medical and para-medical personnel and community organisations to ensure timely and safe discharges/transfers.
CLINICAL
• Perform comprehensive assessment of patient care needs.
• Plan, implement and evaluate care according to changing health care needs.
• Provide supervision and support to other team members.
• Collect and evaluate report information and maintain accurate patient records, to enable effective care delivery.
• Involve the multidisciplinary team and where possible patients, carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
• Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and the multidisciplinary care team.
• Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
• Seek/act on advice from a senior team member or relevant other, as appropriate.
EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT
• Participate in the theoretical and practical professional instruction of all learners and untrained staff.
• To monitor the progress of learners and, in particular, their skills in carrying out practical procedures.
• Attend all manadatory training and update all e- Learning in accordance with Trust requirements
• Participate in all unit training for Paediatric requirements including Paediatric life support and level 2 safe guarding.
• Complete the ward introductory and other training packages assisted by the senios sister and nurse clinicians.
• Develop own skills and knowledge and assist in the development of others.
• Act as a mentor and assessor to pre and post registration learners.
• Lead responsibly for a specific function or area of knowledge/skills within the team. E.g. link person, infection control,safeguarding etc
• Ensure compliance of self with regard to mandatory training and professional practice requirements. Keep up to date with current practices in proton/anaesthetic care.
• Assist in providing an environment conducive to learning, in which staff are able to develop.
• Work towards gaining a qualification in anaesthesitcs.
CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
• Help and create a good working atmosphere by promoting the ward aims and objectives.
• Welcome and introduce new staff to the patients and the nursing team.
• To be familiar with and ensure that all staff know the regulations re: fire emergency and moving and handling.
• To attend regular updating sessions on these subjects, and generally ensure that knowledge regarding current nursing issues and clinical research is up to date.
• Be aware of the Health and Safety at Work Act and it’s implications in the ward situation.
• To supervise Health Care Assistants/Support Workers and multiprofessional students.
• Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy.
• It is essential that all members of staff observe the code of confidentiality and complete Information governance training and annual updates.
• Ensure any concerns are raised and escalated to your line manager.
• Ensure compliance with policies and procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
• Assist in the monitoring of standards of care and contribute to improvements through assisting in benchmarking, audit and research trials, as and when required.
• Support peoples’ equality and diversity.
• Communicate effectively and share best practice with the multidisciplinary team.
