The role…
We are excited to be currently recruiting for a Performance Fire Safety Officer at the Gillian Lynne Theatre for the run of My Neighbour Totoro. Supporting the Theatre Management team in achieving compliance with fire safety and licensing regulations, you will monitor and maintain fire safety in the theatre during performances of the resident production, promoting the health, safety, and security of theatre staff and customers.
Providing the highest standard of service to customers during their visit, you will help deliver our brand mission; to stage the extraordinary.
What you’ll be doing…
1. Participate in and comply with arrangements set out in the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and relevant method statements, risk assessments and policies as well as the Theatre’s Fire Risk Assessment and Evacuation Plans, including training and rehearsal drills.
2. Respond to first aid incidents involving staff, cast and crew; and be on hand to assist with first aid incidents involving customers. Training provided if not currently certified.
3. Ensure customers using the Theatre’s facilities are doing so in the manner intended and that customers are safe throughout their visit.
4. Report any maintenance issues (such as damaged stair nosing or loose handrails etc.) for the attention of the building venue technicians.
5. Implement the control measures identified for the prevention of fire, including the correct use and maintenance of fire doors and fire-fighting equipment.
6. Ensure the fire panel and alarm sensors are in the correct “mode” during performances.
7. Pre-show checks of the venue to ensure that all emergency exits are unlocked, clear (internally and externally) and that emergency exit doors operate properly; ensuring all fire escape routes are clear and free from obstructions; ensuring all internal fire doors are closed.
8. Carry out proactive routine patrols of the venue to identify any fire safety or physical security issues and resolve where appropriate and/or report to theatre management.
9. Personally investigate any fire alarm activations – communicating with Management and LX teams.
10. Assist the Technical department in the safe operation of pyrotechnics or similar items on stage. Be on hand with suitable extinguishing media during the performance when they are in operation. Training will be provided.
11. In the event of a fire breaking out, tackle the fire with the appliances provided if it is safe to do so without taking personal risk.
12. Act as the lead contact for the LFB if attending the building, briefing them on arrival and escorting them to the site of the incident.
13. Assist the Theatre Management with any ‘during performance’ LFB or Local Authority inspections.
14. In conjunction with the theatre management, conduct front of house fire drills at least once a fortnight and full evacuation rehearsals at least twice a year.
15. Support the theatre management in conducting fire safety and security briefings for members of the visiting company & in-house staff when required.
16. When requested to do so, in conjunction with the Technical & Building Services Manager, test the sprinkler system and fire alarm system on a weekly basis recording the results.
17. When requested to do so, operate the Safety Curtain at the correct points of the performance.
18. Ensure electrical appliances have been turned off at the close of business; including equipment in use in the Dressing Room block.
19. Ensure fire-fighting equipment is accessible at all times and report any issues immediately to theatre management.
20. Carry out regular security checks; ensure final exit doors are closed securely or manned.
21. Check any grilles are open and secure whilst the building is occupied and where appropriate are locked closed at the end of the business day.
22. When requested, participate in customer security checks.
23. At the close of business ensure the building is clear of staff, customers and visiting company members. Chain and padlock all final exit doors. Ensure all windows are closed, fire doors shut and lights turned off.
24. When instructed to do so check the correct number of staff are “sitting in” on their levels.
25. Maintain radio contact with theatre management at all times whilst on duty.
26. Carry out post show checks of the physical security of the theatre, including closing external doors and windows and locking where necessary and turning off any lighting not required.
27. Complete the Fire Officer's Digital Logbook at each shift as directed by theatre management. Present the completed Digital Logbook to theatre management for checking and countersigning at the end of each week.
28. Ensure that records of fire safety training, briefings and drills are kept.
29. Communicate any issues relating to fire safety and security in a respectful, helpful and professional manner.
30. Maintain a good knowledge of the theatre and the current production and be ready to answer questions from customers. Proactively help customers in need of assistance, including any customers with specific access requirements.
31. Proactively direct customers to the auditorium, toilets and bars and provide other information as directed.
32. Comply with the Company’s dress code.

Salary: £14.22 per hour (40 hours, 6 days per week)
