Job Summary:
The Associate Director of Exams at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) provides operational leadership to ensure high standards, continuous improvement, and innovative approaches within the exams function. In this role, the successful candidate will oversee the Head of Exams and Head of Quality and Standards, collaborating closely with senior leaders, the Dean, Chief Examiner, and examiners to drive performance and maintain excellence in exam delivery. This role will inspire and empower the team to uphold RCEM’s mission of promoting excellence in emergency medicine education through rigorous exam processes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Management
* Lead the exams team to foster a high-performance culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
* Develop and implement strategies with senior leaders to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with RCEM, GMC, and AoRMC standards in exam delivery.
* Act as a champion of innovation, modernizing practices within the exams department.
* Serve as Deputy to the Director of Education as required.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
* Build and sustain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Directors, Department Heads, the Dean, Chief Examiner, and examiners.
* Promote cohesive, College-first communication and goal alignment across departments.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
* Lead the Exam Transformation Plan, engaging with key stakeholders to align initiatives with strategic objectives.
* Collaborate with Heads of Exams, Quality and Standards, and Education Transformation to deliver solutions to exam-related challenges.
* Monitor and drive the performance of the Transformation Plan, addressing risks and ensuring positive outcomes.
* Foster a culture of continuous improvement, supporting professional development and identifying opportunities for innovation in exam design and delivery.
Policy Development and Compliance
* Analyse and interpret changes in the medical education landscape to ensure RCEM exams meet current academic and regulatory standards.
* Manage complex policy issues, providing expert advice to senior leadership on exam-related matters.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting
* Establish and oversee performance metrics to track the effectiveness of exam initiatives.
* Ensure robust risk management across the exams department in line with RCEM’s risk management approach.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* Education : A strong educational background, ideally with qualifications in a related field.
* Experience :
* Extensive senior leadership experience in an educational or examinations environment with a proven record of high performance.
* Significant experience in managing medical exams or regulated educational processes.
* Strong background in governance, compliance, and stakeholder management within education, regulation, or academic settings.
* Familiarity with UK medical training systems or working within GMC-regulated organizations.
Skills
