Job Summary
Working as a Dental Nurse within a team to provide a high level of clinical care within the Community Specialist Dental Service and support the Dental Officers in all aspects of clinical practice.
Main Duties of the Job
1. To give support for patients specific to the Community Specialist Dental Service, this will include patients with learning disabilities, Autism and sensory issues, complex medical conditions, compromised mobility and severe emotional or mental health problems.
2. Specialised duties for dental nurses within the service include assisting in the provision of treatment with Relative Analgesia Sedation and General Anaesthetic.
3. Routine administration and clerical organisation, including the use of SystmOne for patient appointments and clinical rotas.
4. Reception of patients, preparing them for dental treatment and supervision of patients until they leave the surgery.
5. Efficient preparation of the dental surgery and stock control.
6. To be responsible for decontamination and following trust policies and procedures at all times.
7. To be responsible for monitoring, care and safe use of dental equipment.
8. Triaging daily referrals and analysis options available which are most suited to the patients' needs.
9. To travel to different Community Dental sites when necessary.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job Responsibilities
1. Reception of patients, preparing them for dental treatment and supervision of the patient until they leave the department.
2. The efficient preparation of the surgery and stock control.
3. Knowledge of all dental procedures.
4. Assisting the dental officer in all clinical dental procedures.
5. Processing and mounting of x-ray films.
6. Dealing with and providing support for emergency patients and trauma cases.
7. To carry out oral hygiene instruction and diet advice in the clinical setting, for patients with a diverse range of needs.
8. Dealing effectively with medically compromised and emotionally disturbed patients.
9. To organize and carry out pre-operative checks including blood pressure/INR/Glucose levels (after appropriate training).
10. Assisting in the safe transfer of patients with compromised mobility to and from the dental chair.
11. Responsible for decontamination.
12. Frequent exposure to high risk working conditions, body fluids, patients with infectious diseases.
13. Responsible for monitoring, care and safe use of equipment.
14. To assist in dental screening programs.
15. To take part in dental training programs and other training as appropriate.
16. To ensure all mandatory essential training is carried out.
17. To ensure all Health and Safety responsibilities are carried out in line with the Trust requirements.
18. To assist the clinician during conscious sedation.
19. Monitoring of gases and changing cylinders where appropriate.
20. Routine daily checks and regular maintenance of the sedation equipment.
21. Liaising with the Day Surgery Team to arrange pre-operative assessments.
22. To work with the theatre team, assisting the surgeon throughout the dental procedures.
23. Recording patient data and ensuring holistic care of patients during pre and post-operative periods.
Person Specification
Special Requirements Essential
* Excellent communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to work independently and also as part of a team. Ability to travel independently.
Statutory Registration Essential
* Registration of Dental Nurses.
Special Skills & Knowledge Essential
* Knowledge of all dental procedures. Assisting the dental officer in all clinical dental procedures.
Qualifications Essential
* NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing. Minimum of 4 GCSEs. Verifiable Professional Development Hours.
Experience Essential
* 2 years chairside experience.
