Job Introduction
The Director, Product Engineering (Experiences) has responsibility for and leads multidisciplinary software engineering teams that enable the delivery of a seamless, integrated experience for audiences when interacting with the BBC's digital products across media including Television, Mobile and Web.
This role will lead a large, high-performing software engineering team that, fundamentally, create the best services for the audience, wherever they are. They will work collaboratively and inclusively with cross-functional peers in Product Group and across the BBC to achieve the collective goal of driving faster time to value for audiences from the BBC's digital products.
We are flexible on the location of this role as it is hybrid and could be contracted out of any of our major UK locations (Newcastle/ Manchester/ London or Glasgow would be preferable)
Main Responsibilities
* Works closely with counterparts for Enablement, Platform, Data and Architecture in support of the Director, Engineering & Data, to lead a high performing engineering organisation
* In partnership with Director of Product Management, Experience, develop a multi-year roadmap for experience evolution, ensuring alignment with audience needs and technological advancement
* Ultimate responsibility for the technical vision and strategy for all of the experiences through which audiences access the BBC's digital products. These include responsibility for:
o the BBC's native mobile and tablet apps,
o our websites along with the framework and infrastructure that builds and hosts them,
o and all of our on-TV experiences (including broadcast interactive) and smart speakers
* You will work to bridge these experiences technologically and organisationally to ensure a seamless and integrated experience for audiences
* Ensures development approach is aligned with the overall BBC engineering and architecture strategy and adheres to standards and principles that ensures engineering excellence
* Ensures teams adhere to software engineering best practice
* Deliver the function's strategy as efficiently as possible; driving maximum value through reducing costs, increasing income, ensuring appropriate investment to maximise return to the audience/customer
* Continuous improvement and innovation focussed, ensuring the BBC's digital products keep pace with technical developments and ahead of competitors, ensuring continued compliance and optimisation with new devices
* Foster strong relationships with key leaders across product group, technology group and wider business stakeholders to ensure cohesive strategy execution
* Ensure operational excellence in the products and services delivered and achieve our availability goals
* Drive improvements in the BBC's continuous delivery/integration practices
* Manage resources (financial, technological and people) optimally to deliver the strategic goals of Product Group year-on-year
* Contributes to the healthy promotion of engineering culture in software engineering, investing in our people and the developer experience
* Provide inspirational leadership, support career development and talent retention

Are You The Right Candidate?
Essential Requirements:
* Extensive, demonstrable experience building complex consumer facing digital products and internal facing products across web, mobile and TV applications in demanding high event-driven traffic environments
* Experience working in a media publishing and content production environment would be highly beneficial
* Experience in a senior leadership position responsible for building, motivating and leading high performing development teams at scale
* Passionate about software engineering and digital technology, with the ability to communicate that passion to large-scale distributed teams
* Provides professional leadership and acts as role model to their teams and colleagues alike, representing BBC values and high standards of leadership behaviour
* Adept at managing numerous, diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing numerous competing priorities
* A convincing and persuasive communicator, adept at influencing beliefs and opinions of teams, as well as senior stakeholders, able to establish effective and collaborative relations across BBC departments, and external agencies/stakeholders where required
* Act as the conduit to effective communication and influence across the management team
* Strong awareness of the way in which technical initiatives are defined, delivered, financed and completed successfully
* Excellent commercial and financial acumen, including experience of leading high-value regulated procurements
* Experience in managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers
