Katharine House Hospice is a wonderful 10 bedded in-patient unit providing excellent palliative care to Oxfordshire and South Northamptonshire.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a well established nursing team for 9 months - perfect for those who would like palliative care or deputy sister experience.
Main duties of the job
* To assist the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in providing clinical and managerial leadership to all staff.
* To line manage/appraise and develop a small team of nurses within the ward establishment.
* To lead in a specific area of ward practice/project work on the ward as agreed, making recommendations, coordinating projects and developing practice guidelines and policies based upon robust evidence, gained from risk assessment, audit and literature review.
* To be professionally and clinically responsible to patients within the ward, providing and maintaining a high standard of care and maintaining a communication link between patient and organisation.
* To maintain and continually develop specialist knowledge and skills relevant to the clinical area and to provide an out of hours Triage Service and act as a specialist resource to the Trust.
* Regularly act as shift coordinator, participating in the allocation of workload, ensuring efficient bed management, effective patient care and safety on the ward.
* Contribute to the development of clinical practice, with regards to Departmental, Trust and National recommendations, communicating this to junior colleagues in a positive manner in order to maintain a consistent, motivated ward focus.

Leadership & Management
* Provide leadership and supervision, managerial direction and support to junior colleagues within the ward team in the delivery of service, proactively anticipating and planning for trends whilst maintaining the cohesive team structure and effective use of resources.
* Lead in a specific area of ward practice as agreed, making recommendations, co-ordinating projects and developing practice guidelines and policies based upon robust evidence gained from risk assessment, audit and literature review.
* To be experienced in the role of ward coordinator and with strategies for dealing with issues as they arise, with advice and support from senior staff.
* To promote effective communication between all members of the health care team to support a cohesive working environment for patients and staff.
* Ensure appropriate and cost effective resource management including staffing, equipment supplies and disposables.
* To be competent in managing challenging situations that may arise, i.e. managing conflict, complex discharges and extreme grief.
* Undertake the appraisal and negotiation of ongoing development plans for members of their own team, in conjunction with the Ward Sister, with reference to Ward and Departmental objectives based upon agreed Trust competencies.
* Lead and motivate the team, being an active player providing direction, leadership, feedback and appraisal with consideration and support.
* Support junior staff to develop mentoring and appraisal skills.
* Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in the recruitment of all bands of staff.
* To manage the ward in the absence of ward sister or deputy sister as required.
* Demonstrate the ability to utilise different leadership and managerial styles in practice.
Clinical
* To have relevant specialist training in cancer care or palliative care. For example, to be trained in administration of chemotherapy, and competent in venepuncture and cannulation.
* To be professionally accountable for assessment of the patients needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of planned care, demonstrating a collaborative approach through effective communication and decision-making between the multi-professional team, patients and significant others.
* To demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in the management of the changing healthcare needs of the patient, responding to changes promptly and appropriately and developing specialised plans of care/ follow relevant protocols in collaboration with other senior nurses/ medical staff.
* Act as a clinical role model, demonstrating both a high level of expertise in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct care of palliative patients including physical, psycho-social and technical aspects.
* Promote partnership with patients and promote their right to informed choice and support their ability to self-care.
* Maintain personal contact with patients, relatives and carers, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and ensuring a friendly environment at all times.
* Promote effective communication with medical staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team, using their contributions effectively in the delivery of care and the service.
* Provide clinical direction and support to junior colleagues within the ward team in the delivery of patient care.
* Demonstrate technical skills ensuring adherence to trust and local policies e.g. cannulation, chemotherapy administration, central venous catheter management, and phlebotomy.
* Assist in the development, introduction and application of research-based findings to nursing practice.
* To consistently maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation, and demonstrate competency in the use of information technology resources.
* Exercise accountability by practicing within own limitations and level of competence, identifying developmental needs and proactively addressing these requirements with the support of a mentor.
* Understand and comply with the storing, checking and administering of drugs in accordance with unit drug programme, Trust policy and NMC standards and train and support others with this procedure.
* To prioritise own work and that of others to ensure both the patient and unit is managed safely and effectively.
* To be competent in using specialist equipment on the ward and be able to train and support others within the ward and the Trust.
