The Scottish Refugee Council, established in 1985, is an independent charity dedicated to supporting individuals seeking refugee protection in Scotland. Each year, they assist thousands of men, women, and children in rebuilding their lives by providing practical support, advice, and advocacy. Their comprehensive services include guidance on housing, healthcare, education, and employment, ensuring that refugees can integrate successfully into Scottish society. Beyond direct support, the Council actively campaigns for a fairer, more humane asylum system and works to increase public understanding of refugee issues. Their vision is a Scotland where all people seeking refugee protection are welcomed, have their human rights and dignity respected, and are empowered to achieve their full potential.
The Role
The Director of Services at the Scottish Refugee Council is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of services across Scotland. This includes overseeing the operation of a free-phone helpline, client casework, and support for community organisations and practitioners through resource development, training, and network facilitation. Leading the Service Delivery Directorate, the Director will manage stakeholder relationships, drive service improvements, and ensure high standards of delivery. Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and senior leadership, the successful postholder will play a strategic role in aligning service provision with the organisation’s mission and objectives.
The Person
The Scottish Refugee Council is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader for the role of Director of Services. The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level in a relevant field, with a postgraduate management qualification or equivalent experience. They will have a proven track record in operational service delivery, managing large cross-functional teams, and leading complex service solutions. They will also have knowledge/experience of leading multidisciplinary departments.
With strong leadership and people management skills, the successful post-holder will be able to inspire teams, drive process improvements, and implement change to enhance service quality. The role requires excellent stakeholder management, the ability to represent the organisation externally, and a deep understanding of issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers.
Experience working with local authorities, the Scottish or UK Government, or the voluntary sector is highly desirable. Personally, they will be a strategic thinker with strong problem-solving abilities, resilience under pressure, and a commitment to Scottish Refugee Council’s mission and values.
This is a unique opportunity for a passionate and experienced leader to make a meaningful impact, shaping vital services that support refugees and asylum seekers across Scotland. If you have the skills, vision, and commitment to drive positive change, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
