THIS POST IS SECONDMENT FOR 6 MONTHS DUE TO MATERNITY COVER
An opportunity has arisen for a 12 month secondment as a band 6 Oncology and Haematology Triage Line nurse 22.5 hours per week within the Acute Oncology Service based on ward 10, Singleton hospital.
This position is primarily triage helpline based taking calls from patients undergoing systemic anti-cancer treatment and radiotherapy. The purpose of the triage line is to offer 24/7 triage of patient symptoms using the UKONS triage tool and offer evidence-based advice and guidance on how to manage toxicities of treatment.
On occasions, the successful candidate would be expected to support the nursing staff within the Acute Oncology and Haematology Assessment Unit.
Main duties of the job
Manage the triage telephone helpline providing support and advice to patients who are undergoing systemic anticancer treatment or radiotherapy within Swansea Bay health board.
Up to date knowledge of systemic anti-cancer treatments and common toxicities is required.
You will be expected to have exceptional telephone skills and may have to manage distressed patients and relatives in a calm caring manner.
Co-located with the assessment unit you will be expected to liaise with the on-call and other members of the acute oncology team to ensure patients referred into the assessment unit are suitable and patients requiring more acute or surgical services are referred on the appropriate pathway.
Provide advanced clinical skills to the assessment unit when required.
12 hour shifts 8am-8pm Monday - Sunday.
About us
Cancer Services for people living within South West Wales are provided by the South West Wales Cancer Centre, based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea Bay University Health-Board, (SBUHB). Patients treated at the Cancer Centre come from the Swansea, Neath Port-Talbot areas, and Hywel Dda University Health-Board, some patients from the Bridgend area are also treated at the Centre. The area covered by the Cancer Centre includes a population of approximately 900,000 and over 3,500 patients are treated each annually with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy, these numbers rise every year. There are also patients that have surgery alone for their cancer but no further active treatment, this takes the number over 5,000 each year.
