Locum Consultant in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology
Job overview
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is seeking to appoint a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist with an existing interest in brain tumours in children. Birmingham Children’s Hospital is one of the largest dedicated children’s cancer centres in the UK, receiving approximately 250 new referrals each year; about 10% of UK childhood malignancies.
Main duties of the job
This is a new post which will provide additional support to the existing team of 4.9 WTE NHS consultant oncologists, 4 part-time academic colleagues (2 Professorial appointments and 2 Senior Lecturers), 1 part-time honorary NHS consultant and a part-time Specialty Doctor. The existing Oncology teams provide the full range of tertiary oncology services and have sub-specialty interests in neuro-oncology, general solid tumour oncology, TYA oncology, late-effects and retinoblastoma covering an extensive geographical area. The department has a varied research portfolio including a world-leading programme in functional imaging and metabolism for CNS tumours.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post-holder will oversee the day-to-day management of in-patients through participation in the departmental weekly “on-service” and out-of-hours rota along with undertaking regular outpatient clinics and attending appropriate MDTs. There will be a liaison role with the well-established Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs). The successful candidate will be eligible for inclusion on the specialist register for Paediatric Oncology or be within 6 months of completion of higher specialist training or equivalent.

Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent
* Full GMC registration and License to practice within the UK
* Accredited to the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health or equivalent for CPD
* MRCPCH or equivalent
* On specialist register for Paediatric Oncology (CCT/CESR or equivalent, or within 6 months of completion of higher specialist training)
* Evidence of continuing professional development
Skills/Abilities
* Basic Computer Skills
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary setting
* Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills
* Ability to work on own initiative in a pressurised environment
* Understand and deliver evidence-based care

Experience
* Extensive experience in paediatric oncology
* Completion of National Grid training scheme in Paediatric Oncology or equivalent (min 2 yrs in Paediatric Oncology PTC)

* Evidence of specific training/experience within a sub-specialist area of paediatric oncology
* Evidence of research/clinical experience in paediatric oncology or closely related subjects
