We are seeking a specialty (middle grade) doctor in Paediatrics to join our enthusiastic team. This is an established post that includes CESR training, designed specifically to enable doctors with previous experience and training in paediatric medicine to develop their career through a tailored training program. We envisage this programme to run for around 5 years depending on the individuals previous experience and working pattern, culminating in the requisite skills, experience and portfolio to support application for a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) through the GMC.

* To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team in order to support and help to provide comprehensive Paediatric care within the Trust.
* Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
* Assisting with teaching, training and assessment of junior staff and medical students, nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
* To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
* To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
Working for our organisation
The Community and Children’s Directorate runs regular Clinical Governance and Audit meetings and there is a monthly Clinical Governance and Audit Meeting within the paediatric department. There are weekly CPD opportunities in the Postgraduate Centre including the Grand Round and various lectures. The post holder will also be asked to contribute to teaching and training at the weekly medical training sessions for trainee medical staff alongside other departmental teaching.
In-patient paediatric facilities comprise the Paediatric Ward with 22 beds (including 1 high dependency bed) and Special Care Baby Unit with 7 cots.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Direct Clinical Care
* Facilitate the assessment, treatment and admission of children referred to the paediatric department.
* Initiate emergency management of patients within the emergency department.
* Undertake the assessment and management of patients in outpatient clinic.
* Review of babies on the postnatal wards where there are concerns regarding illness, feeding issues or congenital anomalies.
* Stabilisation of preterm and unwell term babies, including admission to SCBU where appropriate and their continued management on SCBU.
* Provide senior paediatric medical support to other departments, such as Accident and Emergency, surgery and anaesthetics, as required.
* Liaison with other specialties and agencies including primary care.
* To develop patient management plans including necessary investigations and treatments, fully discussing the implications of these with the parents.
* Request diagnostic tests (such as X-Ray and laboratory investigations).
* Perform practical skills, including cannulation (including premature neonates), lumbar punctures, intubation of neonates and UVC/UAC insertion.
* Supervise and provide advice, support and instruction to junior staff and nursing staff within the department.
* Undertake a senior role in the hospital paediatric and neonatal resuscitation teams, and in the resuscitation of seriously ill babies and children.
* Act in accordance with the policies of the Paediatric Department and the Trust and seek advice and assistance from the consultants when necessary.
* Ensure accurate and complete documentation is undertaken for all patient records in line with Trust protocols.
* Undertake clinical discussions with parents and children, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
* Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals in and out of the Trust (e.g. specialty teams, GPs about patient care when appropriate).
* To work proactively with medical, nursing and other healthcare colleagues for the development of good working relationships.
Supporting Professional Activities
* Participate in and contribute towards the formal and informal training and assessment of colleagues, junior doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, students and other health care professionals (e.g. ad hoc training and supervision, tutorials and lectures).
* Maintain an up-to-date record of personal training to satisfy continuous professional development requirements.
* Rotate to different specialities within and out of the Trust according to CESR training needs.
* Actively participate in middle grade teaching programme.
* Assist in Trust clinical risk management requirements and work within the clinical governance framework as agreed with the Trust.
* Undertake and contribute to clinical audit projects.
* Clinical Management duties as delegated by and agreed with the paediatric consultants.
* Ensure regular appraisal is held in accordance with Trust policy.
* Undertake mentoring of junior doctors under the guidance of the consultants.
* Maintain APLS and NLS provider certification (this can be arranged prior to appointment if necessary).
* Participate in monitoring arrangements for hours of work.
* Deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, and exceptionally, perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances to ensure the safe running of the Department.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Experience
Essential criteria
* MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
* APLS and NLS or equivalent provider status (needs to be in place prior to commencement of post, or within a month of starting).
* Evidence of achievement of ST3 competences in Paediatrics at time of application, or likelihood of achieving these by the start date of the post. This includes experience in paediatric emergencies and neonates.
Desirable criteria
* Experience in District General Hospital practice.
