An opportunity has arisen for a Deputy Ward Manager's position on Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan.
We are looking for a qualified nurse who wishes to further their career and join our existing team. The successful candidate should be able to work as part of a team and be able to use their initiative. Excellent communication skills and flexibility is required to meet the needs of the service.
This vacancy is open to all internal and external candidates. NHS Employees should ideally secure their manager's agreement for a secondment arrangement prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made.
This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis to provide cover for an employee on maternity leave and will end on 7-Apr 26 or when the substantive postholder returns. While the post is advertised on a fixed term basis, there is the potential that this may become permanent in the future.
This post is 27 hours per week, full rotation across 7 days.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be working closely with the Ward Manager and deputising in their absence.
The post holder will be committed to providing high quality care to a range of patients with differing needs and be willing to embrace new role opportunities.
The post holder will support the Ward Manager in all aspects of ward management. They will have a key role in coordinating and developing the nursing team and ensuring that patients receive the required standard of care. They will support the Ward Manager in ensuring all staff comply with Trust policies and professional and legal standards.

Planning and Organisational Duties
1. Manage the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager, coordinating the activities of the ward team and deploying resources effectively.
2. Participate in the directorate senior nurse bleep rota as required dealing with emergency/urgent situations, the redeployment of staff and giving advice to staff on other wards as the need arises.
3. Ensure that effective communication is maintained both within the ward itself and with relevant external agencies or individuals.
4. Organise own workload and adjust priorities in response to issues arising in the workplace.
5. Recognise and respond appropriately to issues which require urgent or immediate attention, reporting to other members of the multi-disciplinary/management team as necessary.
6. Deputise for the ward manager as requested at meetings and other events.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care of patients in accordance with their clinical pathway and individual needs.
2. Liaise with patients and their families on a daily basis and deal efficiently with their questions or concerns.
3. Ensure that nursing care delivered within the ward is compliant with legal, professional and organisational standards.
4. Supervise and direct the work of more junior staff.
Responsibility for Finance
1. Contribute to ensuring the effective use of all resources.
2. Bring any potential efficiency savings or anticipated budgetary pressures to the attention of the ward manager.
Responsibility for Human Resources
1. Support the ward manager in managing attendance within the ward area in accordance with trust policy.
2. Participate in the IPR/PDP process, undertaking the IPR/PDP of staff as required by the Ward Manager.
3. Assist the ward manager in ensuring that all newly appointed staff receive induction to the ward and preceptorship as appropriate.
Responsibility for Health & Safety
1. Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
Responsibility for Teaching
1. Facilitate a supportive learning environment for all levels of staff including student nurses.
2. Undertake the role of mentor/preceptor/supervisor to other members of the ward team.
3. Assist members of the ward team to identify their own training and development needs and support them in achieving individual goals.
4. Formally assess the competence of staff and students producing verbal and written reports as required by the ward manager, the university or other departments or agencies.
5. Deliver health education to patients and their families in accordance with their needs.
Person Specification
Additional
1. Able to work day/evening/night duty over a 7 day week.
2. Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
Knowledge
1. Up to date clinical nursing knowledge relevant to emergency medicine.
2. Substantial experience in emergency care/acute medicine.
Skills
1. Specialist nursing skills relevant to the ward.

Experience
1. Post registration experience relevant to the clinical speciality of the ward.

Qualifications
1. 1st Level Registered Nurse (relevant branch).
2. Evidence of continuing professional development since registration.
3. Post reg diploma relevant to the speciality.
4. Teaching/assessing certificate.
5. Manchester triage trained or equivalent experience.
