Werelooking for Senior Engineer with a Software focus to join our Mass Metrology group based at NPL, Teddington.Youllhave experience of developing measurement instrumentation, to help deliverstate of the artmetrology equipment, as well as the confidence and flexibility to deploy the right tools to deliver solutions.
You will work alongside our multi-disciplinary team of Scientists and Engineers, leading the development of software for instrument control, data acquisition and analysis.
One of our current projects involves The Kibble Balance, t he project goal is to develop a capability to achieve a usable and maintainable primary realisation of mass using a means allowed under the SI definition of the kg. - click here to find out more!
Key responsibilities:
Creation and management of requirements, design documents, test plans, verification reports and user guides that support good practice in software engineering.
Translation of key project needs and system requirements to identified software deliverables.
Systematic analysis and documentation of legacy software with a view to refactoring and/or language translation .
Collaborating with the team to ensure that the software interfaces correctly with different instrument sub-systems and delivers a complete system that meets performance and usability targets.
Production of clean, efficient, and quality code, through testing and debugging, with adherence to NPL standards and procedures in software development and engineering, throughout the development cycle.
Ownership of a configuration management strategy and deployment of code to remote installations using DevOps methodology ( e.g., GitLab).
Work with other senior members of the team to assess risks accurately and develop mitigations.
Explaining complex technical concepts to both internal and external stakeholders, from technical and non- technical backgrounds
Staying up-to-date with the latest trends, tools, and technologies in software engineering and sharing your knowledge to advance the team

Key Skills and Experience:
Degree in a relevant technical discipline, such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics or Engineering (Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical or Control)
Experience of software development for instrumentation and/or control systems.
Ability to deliver software to time and quality, within a systems engineering framework.
Recent experience in documenting, creating, testing and implementing production-ready software.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-specialist audiences.
Team player with a proactive attitude
We would also welcome the following:
PostScript programming language skills
Modula-2 programming language skills
Experience of working in a Linux environment and with packages such as Matlab, Python and structured, procedural programming languages
