Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Dental Therapist to join the Community Special Care Dentistry Team in Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust. This is a Consultant lead specialist service providing high quality community-based dentistry to adults with special needs, in multiple sites across Birmingham and the Black Country. We are looking for an experienced hygienist or therapist to provide care for adults with disabilities. This role is a permanent, part time role, 0.4 WTE.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide high quality dental treatment as prescribed by a registered dentist for patients with a wide range of high treatment needs for those who have special needs and are unable to access care in the General Dental Service.
2. To carry out the full range of clinical procedures as permitted within the Dental Therapists Scope of Practice of clinical, under the prescription of registered dentist who has examined the patient and prescribed in writing the course of treatment as defined by the General Dental Council.

Person specification
Qualifications/Training
* Degree or equivalent in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy
* Evidence of continuing education undertaken regularly
* Full General Dental Council registration
* Competency in permitted extended duties: Dental radiography, Local infiltration anaesthesia, Inferior dental nerve block anaesthesia, Dental impressions, Placement of temporary dressings, Re-cementing of crown
* Competency/certification in the provision Inhalation Sedation under UK guidelines
* Certificate in postgraduate medical education or equivalent
Skills/Knowledge
* Good empathic interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal) beyond those required for routine dental care in general dental practice.
* IT skills in clinical software and Microsoft Office
Experience
* Significant experience as a dental hygienist and therapist in restorative treatment for adults and managing patients with advanced periodontal disease.
* Extensive experience in working/dealing with special needs groups including those with learning and physical disabilities, the elderly, medically compromised, severe dental phobia, challenging behaviour and those with neuro diversities.
* Experience of providing treatment for adults with severe dental anxiety
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit / peer review
* Experience of treating adults with a range of disabilities
* Previous relevant teaching experience
