Job responsibilities JOB PURPOSE: To provide support to the practice nursing team to enable them to function effectively To prepare consulting rooms for effective consultation To maintain clinical stocks such as vaccines and drugs To provide care to patients according to and by following practice approved protocols Job Title Senior Health Care Assistant MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES The jobholder must work as part of a team, have the ability to organise and prioritise own workload on a day-to-day basis and observe strict rules about patient confidentiality at all times. The jobholder must know when to seek direction from the Lead Practice Nurse, Doctor or Practice Manager REPORTING In the first instance report to the Lead Nurse and in their absence report to the Practice Manager. SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES The following are the core responsibilities of the Health Care assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.To prepare consulting rooms and maintain stocks of examination instruments and specimen collection materials To take and record blood pressures using templates as requested by doctors or nurses Venepuncture ECGs 24 hour ECGs Teledermatology Removal of sutures/clips Administer vaccinations: Pneumococcal / Shingles / Influenza Administer B12 injections Diabetic Foot Checks NHS Health checks Long Term Condition Reviews To test urine specimens using appropriate equipment and record as requested To ensure that specimens brought in by patients or taken by doctors or nurses are ready for collection by pathology service Complex and Simple dressings To perform other clinical tasks as trained and agreed to meet the needs of the practice To maintain accurate IT records of clinical tasks performed To check and record fridge temperatures daily To store instruments correctly To follow protocols for all clinical procedures To perform any other task within the skillset / training of the postholder e.g. Ear irrigation / assisting with minor operations / coil fits QUALITY Strive to maintain quality within the practice. Assess your own performance and take accountability for your own actions, either directly or under supervision. Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on your own and your teams activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance. Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patient needs. Effectively manage your own time, workload and resources. COMMUNICATION Communicate effectively with other clinicians and practice staff at all levels. Communicate effectively with patients and carers. Recognise patients needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly. CONTRIBUTION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SERVICES Apply practice policies, standards and guidance. Discuss with other members of the clinical team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect your own work. Attend regular team meetings. This document may be amended following consultation with the post holder, to facilitate the development of the role, the practice and the individual. All personnel should be prepared to accept additional, or surrender existing duties, to enable the efficient running of the practice.
