A well-established debt recovery firm based in Edinburgh is seeking a highly motivated and articulate individual to join their team as a Trainee Paralegal. This exciting opportunity will provide the successful applicant with comprehensive training and exposure to a variety of legal areas, including litigation, debt recovery, and enforcement across Scotland, England, and Wales.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Manage and assist with debt recovery cases, including preparing and issuing Letters of Demand.
2. Provide support with liquidation and sequestration processes, with full training provided.
3. Engage with clerks, solicitors, sheriffs, enforcement agents, and clients on a daily basis.
4. Support the firm in dealing with various legal aspects of enforcement, including managing documents and case files.
5. Participate in training sessions designed to build expertise in Scottish law, commercial debt recovery, and enforcement procedures.
6. Work on a mock court case project administered by Chamberlain McBain as part of your development.
7. Occasionally, extra study and legal research may be required to support cases and training.
The Role:
This is a full-time, 2-year fixed-term training contract with a 3-month exit clause, which may be extended by mutual consent. The role will be varied and will provide hands-on experience in a challenging environment, allowing you to gain valuable practical knowledge and insight into debt recovery law. You will be required to demonstrate the ability to work independently while also being an effective team player, and will be expected to show excellent organisational skills and commercial awareness.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
1. A minimum of a 2:2 degree in Law or Legal Studies.
2. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
3. Numerate with an ability to work with financial figures and documents.
4. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
5. A solid understanding of Scots law, particularly in relation to debt recovery, liquidation, and sequestration.
6. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
7. The ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet deadlines.
8. Commercial awareness and the ability to engage professionally with clients and stakeholders.
