Graduate Control Systems Engineer
Brackley, UK
At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell.
Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.
Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.
About the Role:
Before an F1 car reaches the track, it has already completed thousands of virtual laps on the dyno—pushed to the limit in a meticulously simulated racing environment. Before a driver fastens their belts, they have spent hours in motion, immersed in a digital world where every aspect of car and driver performance is analysed in detail. Behind the scenes, cutting-edge technology powers this relentless pursuit of performance, designed and developed by world-class engineers. Could you be one of them?
As a Graduate Control Systems Engineer you’ll work on exciting projects, collaborating with a high-performing team at the forefront of motorsport engineering. You’ll take an active role in the end-to-end development of control systems software—from design and implementation to testing and deployment on our powertrain testbeds and driver-in-the-loop (DIL) simulators. With support from experienced engineers, you’ll gain hands-on experience across the full development cycle, ensuring our systems perform at the highest level.
As a Graduate Control Systems Engineer, you will:
* Develop and maintain the real-time control system software, using MATLAB and Simulink, for our hardware-in-the-loop systems, testbeds, and motion simulators
* Enhance and automate software development processes, including build systems, validation, and deployment workflows, to improve efficiency and reliability
* Develop tools and analysis scripts to streamline testing, automate repetitive tasks, and improve data analysis
* Collaborate with operational teams, providing documentation, diagnostics, and hands-on technical support to quickly diagnose and resolve issues
* Drive innovation, applying cutting-edge control and simulation technologies to F1 and other high-performance engineering projects
* Learn from experienced engineers through structured mentorship, hands-on projects, and exposure to cutting-edge technology
Candidate Profile:
This role is ideal for someone who:
* Has a broad understanding of mechanical systems and vehicle dynamics, as well as control systems and software.
* Has a degree in a mathematical or engineering discipline
* Is passionate about control systems and model-based design
* Has some knowledge or experience with rapid control prototyping (RCP) and HIL systems, such as dSPACE SCALEXIO or Speedgoat, as well as automotive electronics and CAN bus
* Has experience or a strong interest in powertrain testing and controls
* Enjoys solving complex technical challenges using data-driven insights
* Enjoys programming and software development
* Wants to learn and grow in a fast-paced, high-performance environment
