South East Neurosurgery/Spinal surgery unit consists of 9 Neurosurgical and 4 spinal consultants (with orthopaedic or neurosurgical training). The medical team consists of 11 registrars, 7 SHO level doctors, 1-2 Foundation year doctor(s), and 2 Advance Clinical Practitioners (ACP). There are 2 dedicated neurosurgical wards at the RSCH. The department is based in the new Louisa Martindale Building (3Ts) providing state-of-the-art facilities including 3 dedicated neuro/spinal theatres with intra-operative MRI facilities, a brand new Neurointerventional angiography suite, O-arm, 3 Neuro-navigation systems, CT/MRI facilities near neuro-theatres, and multiple MDT rooms.
The successful applicants will cover both elective and emergency adult neurosurgery and spinal conditions working on wards, theatres, ICU/HDU, and emergency department. The SHO on-call rota is 1:7 and you will be working with highly motivated nursing, therapy, and pharmacy teams. This is an excellent opportunity for junior doctors who aspire to become neurosurgeons, interventional neuro-radiologists, neurologists, neuro-oncologists, or neuropathologists. All our posts are well supported and closely supervised by consultants, and the successful post holders will be assigned an Educational and Clinical supervisor and will have regular career progress meetings. The trust strongly supports teaching and training, and the post holders will be encouraged to attend the MRCS exam preparation sessions organized by the Core Surgical training programme.
