Do you enjoy in Science and have a real passion for the environment? If so, we have an interesting position for a Lead Scientist to join our Science team, within our Water Treatment facility here at Hinkley Point C!
What you'll do
You will be supporting the business to ensure final effluent quality is compliant with regulatory standards by monitoring performance. Working proactively and collaboratively to develop measures to address current and future risks. Offering practical guidance and recommendations for reactive events and investigating the root causes to prevent reoccurrence. Managing the client relationship and preparing the business for future permit changes. The Lead Scientist manages two Scientific Analysts and two Environmental Samplers.
You will also be responsible for:
1. Providing a technical support service to wastewater site and Water Management Zones including the operation of processes (sludge, wastewater, groundwater, surface water, and R&D).
2. Reviewing and approving various reports on a weekly and monthly basis to the client, responsible for regularly updating the Turnbull plans and procedures, performing monthly site and WMZ audits.
3. Water Management Committee preparation meeting and Final meeting.
4. Daily Insight action review and triaging the Insight actions.
5. Optimisation of site processes, such as chemical dosing, sludge dewatering, power consumption, etc.
6. Engage with operations teams, contractors, and other scientists, building rapport and improving technical understanding through mentoring and coaching.
7. CEMAR- Early Warning reporting. Collaborating with the SHEQ Team to write risk assessments, RAMS.
8. Pre-start brief Science Team, Toolbox talks, Safety messages, Team training, Team bonus scores.
9. Provide subject matter advice and support on environmental and sustainability tasks.
10. Undertake monthly environmental inspections.
11. Liaise and be the main contact with OSM Team for any issues.
12. Produce Monthly Environmental Managers Meeting slides.
13. Accountable for meeting Science Team monthly KPIs.
14. Collating and storing data reports, service/maintenance records, and calibration documents.
15. Implementing corrective action to ensure compliance.
16. Report writing for submission to the Client.
17. Organizing sampling and monitoring programs, responding to incidents and emergencies on site.
18. Issue and manage the permits to discharge system alongside the Scientific Analysts for contractors across the site.
19. Develop knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and issues and provide technical support to the Company on treatment issues.
20. Liaise with laboratories for various testing of water, sewage, and bacteria.
21. Liaise with treatment team to optimise processes and new trials.
22. Manage COSHH chemicals and HAJ Laboratory, undertake chemical dosing trials and jar testing.
23. Attend regular meetings with NNB and treatment teams for updates.
What you'll need
1. Relevant engineering degree or scientific degree or equivalent qualification in wastewater or environmental engineering.
2. The ability to prioritise and balance a reactive workload and challenging turnaround times with fixed resources in the team.
3. The ability to analyse significant amounts of data from several sources and logically identify the underlying cause.
4. Working towards or have attained membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g., CIWEM).
5. Suitable experience in the water industry/wastewater treatment processes/environmental management.
6. Ability to differentiate good and bad operational practice and understand the nature of the standards to which we operate and how operations may impact on those standards.
7. The ability to understand and complete complex scientific calculations to optimise both quality and cost obligations.
8. Knowledge of environmental permitting and regulations.
9. Skilled in analysis, organisation, and presentation of data.
10. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively influence the opinions of others and manage the team.
11. Self-motivated and with the ability to use own initiative to drive and deliver solutions.
12. Ability to foster a collaborative approach across departments and with the client and external stakeholders.
13. Knowledge of COSHH management.
14. Experience in laboratory testing and techniques.
