We are looking for a Journalist and Production Editor to join Research Professional News, our award-winning news team, working across titles which cover research policy and funding in the UK, Europe and around the world. This role covers both journalism and production work on Research Professional News’s daily and fortnightly alerts. The journalist and production editor researches and writes news articles and features covering research policy, funding and higher education, as directed by section editors. They also work alongside production colleagues to ensure all publications are published on schedule and to high production standards. Responsibilities include sourcing images, preparing email alerts, uploading articles and assisting with general editorial tasks. About you – experience, education, skills, and accomplishments Bachelor’s degree or equivalent Up to 1 year’s experience as Journalist and/or Production Editor or demonstrable interest in journalism and / or editorial production work. High levels of literacy and numeracy and a flair for written English. What will you be doing in this role? Research and write daily online news stories. Research and write additional in-depth news, features and interviews. Deliver accurate, engaging copy, written to house style, to agreed deadlines and word counts. Develop a thorough understanding of our publication’s audience and news agenda, reflecting this in your work. Promote articles on social media as directed. Learn from feedback given by news editors and editors, correcting any mistakes in future copy. Apply knowledge of media law and follow internal processes to safeguard against libel risk. Work with production colleagues to ensure daily, weekly and fortnightly editorial products and supplements are published on schedule and to the highest production standards each edition. Prepare and check daily email alerts and upload articles to the website as required. Source images appropriate to the publication to briefs provided by the news team and designer; resize and edit images using Photoshop as directed by the designer / editing team. Ensure all images used have appropriate copyright permissions in place and are correctly credited. Prepare and upload job adverts as required, liaising with the advertising sales team to ensure bookings are fulfilled. Assist with press days and provide support with editorial administration tasks as required to ensure the smooth running of the publications and associated content and events, especially during busy periods.
