An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Sister to join our Paediatric Assessment Unit team. The successful candidate will be a registered Paediatric nurse who will demonstrate excellent leadership skills. The post holder will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate staff whilst working to deadlines.
It is an exciting time to join the paediatric team at Walsall due to the expansion and progression of the service. PAU is housed in a state-of-the-art purpose-built unit, leading the way in progressing virtual wards and a new team structure creating a dynamic way of teamwork. We are leading the way with digital innovation.
The paediatric department comprises of a 21-inpatient ward, a 12 bedded PAU, surgical work, a virtual ward, children community nursing team, and outpatient’s department.

Responsibilities:
1. Function as an expert clinical practitioner within the general paediatric unit, delivering direct patient care while managing, leading, co-ordinating, and overseeing nursing practice.
2. Carry 24-hour continuing responsibility for the coordination and monitoring of all clinical activities within PAU.
3. Ensure efficient and effective utilization of all resources required to deliver optimum quality care to children, young people, and their families who attend PAU.
4. Deputise for the Paediatric matron, driving forward evidence-based practice and taking responsibility for the supervision of staff and the policies and practices within the paediatric department.
5. Actively contribute to practice development within the paediatric department, ensuring staff have opportunities to develop in their roles, are assessed, and are competent to deliver the required care.
6. Be responsible for the management of PAU, effectively leading, motivating, supervising, and directing staff to ensure time and resources are managed through effective teamwork.
7. Ensure staff have a clear understanding of their duties and responsibilities and the standards of performance and conduct expected of them throughout the 24-hour period.
8. Maintain maximum usage of available beds by utilizing agreed operational strategies to facilitate appropriate admissions and timely discharge.
9. Take responsibility for developing, implementing, and reviewing clinical practices to ensure cost-effectiveness.
10. Assist the matron in managing the overall paediatric budget and be an authorized signatory for stock orders, Roster pro, and expenses.
11. Contribute to annual staffing establishment and skill mix reviews, promoting new ways of working that support divisional and corporate objectives.
12. Work with all members of the multi-professional team to develop services that meet organizational and contractual requirements.
13. Participate in the paediatric senior nursing rota to ensure a visible senior nurse presence in the department, requiring working clinical shifts, weekends, and bank holidays.
14. Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required.
15. Monitor the quality of care in relation to the health outcomes for specific patients.
16. Identify and pursue own educational and professional development and attend mandatory training as required.
