This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference and become a member of the Chemotherapy / William Budd Day Care Team and provide comprehensive administrative support to the service based at the Royal United Hospital.
You will be responsible for scheduling new patient referrals for Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (formerly known as chemotherapy) and supportive therapies, in accordance with protocols.
You will work under the indirect supervision and direction of the designated nurse in charge within the Unit.
We will teach you all the processes underpinning the delivery of Systemic Anti Cancer Therapies (SACT), referral of patients for a named group of procedures or to other teams (e.g., district nurses). You will participate in cover arrangements of other administration team members at times of training, annual leave, sick leave, and/or vacancy.
We are looking for an individual who has a sensitive and compassionate manner as you will be dealing with patients and relatives who are in various states of emotional distress due to the delicate nature of the disease.
Main duties of the job
* Scheduling all new referrals as per local procedure. Liaising with patients via telephone to ensure that the proposed start date is amenable to them, to answer simple questions regarding attending Chemotherapy / William Budd Day Care such as PICC insertion and scalp cooling, and to escalate complex questions or concerns to the nursing team. Confirm in writing all verbal information told to the patient.
* Ensure any required procedures or referrals to other members of the multi-disciplinary teams are requested and appointments confirmed in a timely manner, e.g., blood tests, PICC insertions, inform Private Patient's office, Echo requests.
* Using the chemotherapy electronic software package (ARIA), ensure the patients' scheduled dates for treatment are synchronized with the 'targeted' dates for treatment.
* Manage 'deferrals and cancellations' of new starters as per local processes.
* Handle cases where patients decline to commence treatment within the timescale specified by the clinician.
* Address situations where capacity does not meet the demand to commence treatment within the specified timeframe.
