Job summary An exciting new opportunity has arisen in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme for a HCPC registered Laboratory Manager based at QMC, Nottingham. The role will lead the laboratory service at a time when the country is expanding the age of screening to lower age groups, reducing cut-off levels and moving towards digital communications. The Eastern hub is one of 5 hubs responsible for the call and recall of subjects to take part in the English Bowel Cancer Programme. It invitesapproximately 1.4 million people to complete a quantitative faecal immunochemical test (FIT) and approximately 70% of individuals (between 54 and 75 years of age) take up this opportunity each year. The Hub is expanding the age range of screening to 50 year olds by 2025. In response to NG12, DG30 guidelines the Department also offers symptomatic FIT to local and regional GPs to enable them to better triage their patients who have, often vague, symptoms of colorectal cancer. The Hub currently employs nearly 60 staff, who are involved in sending out, receipting, analysis and reporting of FIT tests along with bookingSpecialist Screening Practitioner appointments, and performing other administrative duties. We also operate a busy Helpline for participants in the programme, handling over 100,000 calls each year. The post would suit an individual who has significant laboratory management and strategic planning experience and is keen to be involved in cancer screening. Main duties of the job Working under the leadership of the Programme Manager as part of the Senior Management Team, the BCSP Laboratory Manager role is critical to the successful operations of the service. The role encompasses management and strategic planning of the laboratory team, which will require specialist knowledge of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. In particular, the role is designed to fulfil the following functions: To organise the day to day operational management of the laboratory ensuring optimal performance of equipment, materials and staff.
