Entity: Production & Operations Job Family Group: Subsurface Group Job Description: The Geofluids and Petroleum Systems team is a centrally managed team of flow-to-work specialist geologists who are deployed globally into squads to perform basin modelling, geochemistry, and fluid description activities. The diverse portfolio of work spans the entire range of Exploration, Reservoir Development and Low Carbon subsurface activities, as well as contributing to training, coaching and the digital agenda. About the opportunity : We are now looking for a Geofluids and Petroleum Systems (PeST) Discipline Leader (DL), who would lead a team of 12-15 specialist geologists supporting delivery of 100 projects per annum in Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Trinidad, Canada, UK, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Iraq, Oman, Libya, Mauritania and Senegal, India and Indonesia, plus basin screening and access. In this role, as the successful candidate, you will work in partnership with all the other Subsurface partners to support timely business delivery, technical verification, people development and deployment. This is a global role and we welcome applications from different countries, offering some flexibility with the role location in one of our bp offices. About the role : In more detail, some of your key accountabilities will be to: Lead a team of Geofluids and Petroleum systems specialists to support business delivery globally. Define and deliver work standards – ensure the appropriate Subsurface subject area workflows, digital tools, processes and data standards are at the heart of technical delivery. Support the Squads to seek relevant expertise and drive technical excellence, providing technical coaching and verification as needed. Drive knowledge sharing and continuous improvement between squads and units. Risk Management – Work with the Squad Leads and other DLs in Subsurface and Wells to ensure that work planning is fit for purpose, cross subject area integration is appropriate and self-verification (SV) plans are in place and completed for technical work. Promote a technical and safety “speak up” culture that probes understanding and communication of uncertainty and risk in the integrated new well delivery products. Drive closure of gaps identified through SV. Safely and reliably deliver high value opportunities in resilient hydrocarbons and low carbon solutions. People Management – Actively support personal development needs, goal setting, subject area succession planning and people deployment to prioritised activity. Manage the performance review cycle and motivate staff to develop their careers. Help recognise and resolve staff wellbeing concerns and subject area health problems. Create a culture of inclusion, collaboration and sustainable performance delivery for bp staff and contractors working in well planning and operations. Planning & Prioritisation - Work with the GSS and Region business unit leaders, Discipline Managers and other Leads in Subsurface and Wells, to ensure that squads are appropriately resourced and skilled for the assigned activity and tasks. Share information on subject area capacity and skills to influence business & federal work plans and prioritisation. Support delivery of technical work products, solving complex business challenges and lead subject area/federal initiatives. About you : You will have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geology, or related applied earth sciences. You will also have significant relevant industry experience as a specialist Geofluids and/or Petroleum systems Geoscientist, supporting delivery of exploration, appraisal, development, production, OBO, new well delivery and/or low carbon activity. Essential experience and job requirements : The Geology DL for Geofluids and PeST requires expertise leading “flow to work” practitioners who are deployed globally and work with cross-discipline and cross-entity partners. As the successful candidate, you will need an ability to switch context easily and manage multiple work fronts simultaneously across split site locations. As the DL you will verify that work products are fit-for-purpose for the technical complexity, business delivery risks and investment magnitude. Essential skills for the Geofluids and PeST DL role: Specialist skills in Geofluids and Petroleum Systems Geoscience, applied across multiple basins and a range of different business activities. Excellent geoscience skills in subsurface characterisation and integration. Ability to provide technical coaching, assurance, and leadership, by showing direction and giving autonomy. Strong desire to develop new skills and deliver through others. Work closely with relevant Unit leader/Manager and Squad leaders to align/assign squad activities with business priorities (Exploration/Region/OBO/ GSS). Work with SL and squad members to define Terms of Reference (ToR) and workplans, to define the products and the ‘definition of done’ as defined by the ToRs. Partner with squad leads, other DLs and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to frame the required technical work, ensuring that work products are “fit for purpose” for the technical complexity, subsurface uncertainty, and risk magnitude. Ensure compliance with bp requirements, and provide improvement, update and implementation of subject area guidelines, processes, training, toolkits and workflows, to support delivery of appropriate quality technical products. This will include technical verification, coaching of team members to deliver “fit for purpose” technical quality or may require the DL connecting the squad to appropriate Advisers/PSMES/SMEs. Support the wellbeing of the team and monitor workload for individuals, encouraging a culture of working at a sustainable, healthy capacity. Responsible for people management workflows, including development discussions (through Focus and Grow), performance evaluations and promotions. As the DL you will represent team members in development forums and deployment discussions in agreement with Business ULs/Managers, DMs and DLs, and support the deployment of individuals to deliver business priorities. Drive integration and collaboration across subject areas in Subsurface, Technology, Wells, Projects, Production, G&LC and Finance, to deliver business solutions, embed lessons learned and take advantage of commonalities. Desirable skills for the Geofluids and PeST DL role: Support the transformation of the Subsurface organisation through engaging in agile best methodologies and encouraging deployment of digital solutions into technical delivery. Experience of working in diverse global teams and managing partners. Encourage and facilitate cooperation within and between squads and teams to develop a geoscience community that supports and learns from each other. Proactive at exchanging feedback and providing development opportunities so that people continuously improve. Ability to work effectively in fast-paced and complex environments to focus on the key issues across multiple different work fronts. Motivate team members to own the quality of their technical work, encouraging them to seek technical guidance from SMEs and Advisers so that “fit for purpose” products are delivered in a timely manner to inform business decisions.
