The Senior Legal Advisor will provide professional legal advice and representation to the Council, undertaking casework, litigation, and advocacy. This role requires a proactive and enabling approach to facilitate policy objectives within the law. The ideal candidate will have experience in local government, child care, adult care, or education, with strong ICT skills and the ability to present training courses.

Key Responsibilities

* Undertake a mixed caseload of litigation and advice
* Advocate at all levels of Court/Tribunals as appropriate, including preparation and management of cases
* Provide professional legal advice and services to the Council on matters relating to local government and its partners
* Draft and settle legal documentation
* Ensure Council officers and service departments act in accordance with the Council's Constitution and Governance framework
* Provide a responsive and cost-effective service to Council officers and service departments
* Carry out work in accordance with customer care, health and safety, and equalities agendas
* Maintain continuing professional development and act in accordance with the Solicitors Code of Conduct
* Present training courses and services to staff in Legal Services and other departments
* Review, develop, and improve systems, processes, and services for continuous improvement and best value
* Support, cover for, and supervise other staff, and make an effective contribution to the management and operation of Tameside Legal Services
* Undertake such other duties within Legal Services as required, commensurate with grading and general character of the post
Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 per annum

Requirements

1. Qualified Solicitor or Barrister
2. Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
3. Minimum 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context, ideally within a public sector
4. Experience in Local Government/Child Care/Adult Care/Education/Prosecutions/Civil Litigation/Licensing law
5. Experience of advocacy before Courts/Tribunals/Inquiries
6. Experience of litigation procedures
7. Strong ICT skills across all Microsoft products particularly Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint

Working Arrangements

The successful candidate will be working at the PAYE rate advertised, without umbrella pay terms. For absolute clarity, we only work on a PAYE basis.
