The Lead Geotechnical Engineer role sits in the Ground Engineering Team within the Site Engineering Department and reports to the Ground Engineering Discipline Manager. The successful candidate will initially be the Ground Engineering Lead (GEL) during the pre-FID and construction phase for our East Anglia One North UK offshore wind farm. This will be the main focus of the role, however, as this project moves to completion, the role will be the GEL and / or Lead Geotechnical Engineer on all stages of an offshore wind farm development. With the support of the broad expertise within the Ground Engineering Team, this will offer considerable growth opportunities for the successful candidate. The company adopts an intelligent client business model for ground engineering services. This comprises a relatively small pool of company permanent staff with differing sub-disciplines (e.g. geotechnical design, geotechnical survey, engineering geology, geophysical survey etc.). Projects are led by a GEL and supported by external contractors and consultants. In general, the Lead Geotechnical Engineering will be assigned as the GEL on a project(s) with support on relative ground engineering specialisms, as required. The successful candidate will be required to use their technical excellence to identify and manage ground risk. With a strong technical, commercial, contractual and project management background, they shall define scopes of work, lead tendering, and manage survey contractors and specialist consultants. They shall also support other projects in their area of expertise and support the Ground Engineering Discipline manager in leading the development and growth of the Ground Engineering Team. What you’ll be doing As a GEL, tasks will include: Having overall responsibility on the project for managing ground engineering risks and activities. Lead in defining scopes of work and tendering site investigations campaigns, ensuring: Both project requirements and standards are met; Minimising the ground risk as low as reasonably practicable ensuring a balance between ground risk, CAPEX and packages requirements/ expectations. Lead and manage multi €m offshore site investigations to time, programme and budget. Lead project ground engineering activities supported by the Owner’s Engineer to continually identify, monitor and manage ground engineering risks. Identify where consultancy support is required to manage ground risk. Lead in defining scopes of work, tendering and managing ground engineering consultancy packages. Support and advise the relevant packages during foundation and cable design to ensure ground risk is appropriately managed. Support and advise the relevant packages during the consenting process. Identify and communicate ground risk to key stakeholders. Ensure the project surveys meet the consent, design and installation requirements of the project packages through continued stakeholder engagement and management. Lead Ground Engineering components of the certification process in collaboration with relevant packages. Managing the tendering and development of the Ground Model and communicating the outputs, risks and recommendations to the project packages. Ensure Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) is met. Support may also be provided to Onshore Works teams on ground related aspects led by the Onshore works team. As a Lead Geotechnical Engineer within the Ground Engineering Team, tasks will include : Leading the development of standardised tools and processes, and monitor and address lessons learned. Supporting other projects in your area of expertise, including QA/QC support. Building, strengthening and maintaining internal (business) and external (contractors, consultant and academic) relationships with stakeholders to optimise projects. In particular, working with local contractors to enable their safe and sustainable growth and development to meet the technical, project, commercial and QHSE expectations of the wider business that may not yet be met in this market. Liaising with their counterpart Lead Engineers on specific discipline areas to ensure continual updating of best practice and addressing lessons learned in a continual improvement process. Promote and contribute to knowledge sharing within the Ground Engineering team as well as with the various stakeholders. Comply with industry best practice and awareness of relevant industry developments. Identifying innovation opportunities, propose the associated business case, and support and promote of the company’s best interests in innovation projects that are progressed (promoting links with various academic institutions). The requirement to perform these tasks will vary depending on business, project and team needs. What you’ll bring We are looking for individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and cultural awareness. To be successful in this position you will need to demonstrate the majority of the following : Education to Degree level in relevant engineering discipline. Chartered status with a relevant institution. Significant knowledge and experience of leading geotechnical design and ground engineering installation activities for an offshore wind farm. Excellent capability and experience in project management, commercial, legal and financial processes. Significant experience of leading ground engineering teams on projects and a desire to develop small teams within their lead area. Comprehensive knowledge of offshore procedures, standards and guidelines. The ability to balance technical detail with commercial needs and provide recommendations, taking into account all relevant risks. Comprehensive knowledge of quality processes, and health, safety and environmental legislation associated with offshore/marine construction projects. Ability to communicate effectively and influence decision making with a diverse team of different expertise and experiences to achieve results. Excellent document writing skills in English, and excellent ability to communicate complex problems in a simple manner to a variety of backgrounds. Pro-active and diligent approach. Innovative and creative thinker. Problem solver. IT literate with the ability to effectively operate MS Office systems and the willingness to learn other IT based project management software.
