Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specimen Reception Manager (Band 5) within the Blood Sciences automation laboratory. The successful candidate will join the team managing our Specimen Reception service, responsible for effective operations in this 24/7 critical service integral to delivering efficient return of patient results. You will work alongside the large technical team in Blood Sciences to deliver pathology services to North Bristol NHS Trust patients and external service users.
The successful candidate will be expected to work 37½ hours per week Monday to Friday.
Main duties of the job
Blood Science specimen reception operates 24/7, receiving and processing over 5000 requests a day. The team of 36 medical laboratory assistants and Team Leaders ensure blood samples are handled and processed in line with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, generating accurate results to aid patient diagnosis and treatment.
The successful candidate will manage the Specimen Reception area, and its assigned staff, on a day to day basis, creating the E Roster and managing annual leave to ensure the service is covered 24/7.
Applicants should have experience of Specimen Reception in a pathology setting, training and supervision of staff and managing staff and staff wellbeing. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The postholder will be responsible for their own work and that of other specimen reception staff, including preparing and monitoring staff rotas, under the overall direction of senior staff.
You will act as line manager to Team Leaders and Medical Laboratory Assistants working within Blood Sciences Specimen reception, responsibilities include, sickness management, appraisals, training, annual leave and recruitment in line with Trust policies.
Participate in quality and risk management of the department including reporting and investigation of adverse incidents, writing and managing standard operating procedures and risk assessments within Specimen Reception. To participate in audit as required.
Communicate with a range of people including laboratory staff of all grades/roles - within the department and across pathology at North Bristol NHS Trust. Service users from within the Trust and other external organisations as required.
Effective communication with Specimen reception staff via verbal and written exchange, utilising 1:2:1 communication, emails, meetings and telephone / MS Teams calls.
To promote effective team working.
Proficient in the use of Q-Pulse, Laboratory information system and other IT packages including spreadsheets and databases used within the department.
