GREYSTONE HOUSE SURGERY JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title:Phlebotomist Grade:A/B according to experience Accountable to:Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioner, GP Principals, reporting to the Practice Manager JOB PURPOSE To work as a member of the Primary Care Team providing a phlebotomy service at the Practice. MAIN DUTIES To obtain specimens of blood for pathology To ensure all specimens are collected in the appropriate container /test tube pertinent to the test required To ensure all specimens are correctly labelled and stored ready for collection To be aware of the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patients, carers and their families, providing support, referring to senior team members as appropriate To ensure patient confidentiality at all times, keep accurate and up to date records To work within the policies and guidelines set out by East Surrey PCT and the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) To undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibility and grade of the post. This may include some clerical duties e.g. ordering, photocopying and general administration To organise ones daily work/appointments to ensure most effective use of time To respect and understand the impact of beliefs and cultural identity OTHER DUTIES To undertake such duties as may be reasonably required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibility and scale of the post To have responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of self and others in the working environment, to follow safe working practice and to comply at all times with the health and safety and other procedures PERSON SPECIFICATION A/B GRADE CriteriaEssentialDesirable QualificationsNo formal nursing qualifications but willing to undertake in house phlebotomy training and attain the required competency level to carry out job role NVQ level 2 or 3 Relevant knowledge/ AwarenessAware of confidentiality, patients and carers right to choose Good interpersonal skills Good communication skills IT skills Experience6 months experience working within a nursing or residential home environment or home based care services Skills/Abilities/ AptitudesAble to work independently following verbal or written instruction Able to cannulate and obtain blood samples via peripheral veins/following in house training and assessment Well organised approach to work Ability to work as part of a team Aware of own limitations Able to follow instructions Flexible approach to work
