Band 8a-Sleep Lead Physiologist/AHP (maternity cover)
The post holder should be a clinical expert in the field of sleep and ventilation and is required to have a high clinical profile ensuring the provision of effective and efficient care. At this level the post holder is expected to work as a highly skilled senior sleep and ventilation physiologist with expert knowledge.
This role is clinical and managerial, the main focus of the role is to provide patient-centred clinical care of patients with sleep and ventilation disorders. The managerial aspect includes the leadership of the Royal Free Sleep and Ventilation team - consisting of Band 7 and band 5 sleep physiologists, STP Students, ATOs (technical officer) and admin staff and lead and develop the sleep service at the community diagnostic centre (CDC) at Finchley memorial Hospital.
The post holder will be expected to exercise a high degree of personal professional autonomy and make critical judgments to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role. The post holder will be guided by health, organisational or broad occupational policies, but in most situations the post holder will need to establish the way in which these should be interpreted and advise relevant stakeholders accordingly. He/she will be expected to work at an advanced clinical level within their level of competence and to work flexibly as part of the team.
This is for a fixed term contract of one year to cover maternity leave.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide high quality care to all patients under the care of the sleep and Ventilation Service.
2. Always maintain a professional behaviour and promote a positive image of Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust at all times, in line with World Class Care values.
3. Lead and develop the sleep service at the community diagnostic centre (CDC) and train staff (band 7s and band 5s) in sleep diagnostic testing and scoring at Finchley Memorial Hospital and maintain the quality of sleep diagnostic testing at Royal Free London.
4. Provide professional, clinical and managerial leadership to all staff, including the Band 7, Band 5, STP student and junior staff, and ensure the provision of a high quality, responsive service.
5. Ensure that the needs of patients are placed at the centre of care delivery, thus achieving trust and national standards for clinical quality, safety and patient experience.
6. Provide a high standard of specialised advice/education on all levels to medical professionals, students, patients and company representatives. Have the ability to receive highly complex information where tact and persuasive skills are required.

The sleep & ventilation team at the Royal Free Hospital is an award-winning service and is renowned for its innovation and research. The service reviews both CPAP and NIV patients. There is an exciting opportunity of a fixed term contract for 12 months to cover maternity leave.

Person Specification
Education & Professional Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Respiratory and Sleep Physiology) or equivalent experience + professional exam ARTP Part I and part 2
* HCPC/ RCCP (Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists) registered or equivalent
* Further education in subjects relevant to respiratory function & physiological measurements
* Specialist knowledge in practical & theoretical aspects of respiratory physiology & sleep and ventilation disorders
* Knowledge of specialist procedures acquired through specialist/management courses or training/experience to MSc. level
Experience
* Post-qualification experience as a Respiratory Physiologist/Practitioner with specialist knowledge in non-invasive ventilation
* Experience in managing sleep and ventilation patients
* Teaching & mentoring junior staff and students (student healthcare scientists & other healthcare professionals)
* Experience of managing own time and workload effectively
* Experience working independently as well as part of a team
* Experience of performing and interpreting specialist tests (e.g. cardio-respiratory sleep studies and CBG)
* Proven and demonstrable post MSc qualification experience or equivalent appropriate post qualification experience.
* A minimum of 4 years' experience as Chief Physiologist/ Senior Practitioner (Band 7)
* Practical experience and familiarity with the range of basic and advanced/complex sleep investigations and treatments.
Skills and Attitudes
* High level understanding of concepts of Respiratory Sleep Medicine across the three main modalities sleep disordered breathing, complex sleep and behavioural sleep medicine.
* Knowledge and range of medical conditions/treatments to enable triage and prioritisation of patient referral
* Knowledge of range of medical equipment and technologies related to the field
* Understanding of concepts related to service delivery e.g. budget/resource control, procurement, business planning
* Level of understanding of budgetary management
* Understanding of risk management.
* Understanding of the complexities and pace of change in the NHS
* Excellent communication skills and ability to negotiate and influence
* Skilled in use of computer/keyboard
* Knowledge of clinical governance issues e.g. handling complaints, clinical risk management
