The Medical Centre
The medical centre provides a high standard of health care and welfare support for our pupils. The school nurses and Health care assistants provide a clinically effective, high-quality service of nursing care to pupils and first aid care to all members of the school community. The school nurses and Health care assistants provide a holistic approach to the care of pupils, which includes health promotion, PSHE and illness and injury assessment and treatment.
Main duties
The health care assistant role is to provide support and assistance to the registered nurses. To help maintain high standards of cleanliness and general housekeeping duties within the medical centre.
Nursing Role
1. Assist with nurse drop-in clinics at agreed times within the school day.
2. Provide basic first aid advice and emergency care and treatment as necessary within the school day and on call (including some overnight and weekend duties).
3. Signpost pupils and staff to counselling and health advice services as appropriate/liaising with staff and Designated Safeguarding lead as required.
4. Carry out child and adolescent monitoring programmes.
5. Operation of control of infectious diseases.
6. Follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.
7. Maintain treatment room stock, hygiene and tidiness.
8. Ensure beds are changed and laundered as necessary.
9. Arrange for boarding children to attend any medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary, liaising with others for the provision of transport.
10. Assist with caring for any pupils admitted to the medical centre.
Housekeeping duties
1. Keep the medical centre clean and tidy.
2. Clean, dust and mop treatment room, bedrooms, kitchen, corridor and toilets.
3. Empty bins and take out the rubbish.
Health Education of Students, staff and Self
In conjunction with the other nurses, to:
1. Promote health education throughout the school population.
2. Attend appropriate ongoing training to fulfill job description requirements and duties.
Administrative
In conjunction with the other nurses, to:
1. Maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and safely.
2. Keep nursing records to a high standard ensuring the accurate and rapid retrieval of information.
3. Maintain general office procedures.
4. Keep up to date with current best practice, attending training seminars and sessions with the Senior Nurse.
Health and Safety
In conjunction with the other nurses, to:
1. Have an involvement and awareness of health and safety issues within school affecting staff, children or the environment.
2. Keep records of reported accidents.
3. Maintain and manage the first aid kits throughout the school.
Liaison
In conjunction with the other nurses, to work closely with:
1. Members of the boarding community, the Designated safeguarding Lead, the Head of Boarding and all other departments as necessary.
2. School health advisors and other members of the Primary health care team.
3. Doctors, health centre staff and pharmacy as appropriate.

5. Full driving licence with use of car.
6. Work to deadlines and under pressure.
7. Ability to prioritise.
8. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and performance of duties as outlined above.
9. Basic I.T skills and willingness to develop using new technologies.
