CONSULTANT GENERAL OPHTHALMOLOGIST WITH AN INTEREST IN NON-SURGICAL GLAUCOMA
Applications are invited for the permanent post of Consultant Ophthalmologist
This is permanent post which will enhance the current establishment of NHS and academic staff of the Department of Ophthalmology, Alliance Hospitals and community practices. The successful appointee will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit. They will be required to undertake management duties and work in a multidisciplinary team.
The appointee will have a principle interest in General Ophthalmology with an interest in Non Surgical Glaucoma and they will be expected to contribute to the general Ophthalmology and Glaucoma service on the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital site and associated community hospitals or GP practices. Participation on the on call rota and in the eye casualty department is essential.

Main duties of the job
1. Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
2. To share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of patients.
3. To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that the services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
4. Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
5. Supervise and train junior medical staff.
6. To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
7. Teaching, research and administration.
8. To proactively develop the service
9. To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
The appointee will join an active and enthusiastic team of 27 Ophthalmologists who work at the Leicester Royal infirmary, Leicester General Hospital, community hospitals and GP practice sites including Loughborough, Hinckley, Coalville, Melton, Market Harborough, Oakham, Wigston, Syston and Earl Shilton.
The Ophthalmology Service in UHL is currently providing patient care specialising in the areas of Medical retina, Uveitis, Oculoplastic, Lacrimal, Cornea, Glaucoma, Vitreoretinal surgery, Neuro Ophthalmology and Paediatric Ophthalmology.
Applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date have a certificate of completion of specialist training.

18. The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.
19. The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Program's appropriate to the role.
20. To be able to provide support when needed in the emergency eye department.
21. To be a point of escalation when the emergency department requires senior consultant advice.
22. To provide Consultant Ophthalmology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester.
23. To provide Consultant Ophthalmology services by way of Outpatient clinics and Outpatient procedure lists at the University Hospitals of Leicester and in peripheral units.
24. To work flexibly and cooperatively with the other consultant Ophthalmologists to maximise the utilisation of outpatient procedure lists and outpatient clinics.
25. To provide emergency Ophthalmology services to patients in Leicestershire on the on call rota
26. To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported.
27. To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes To actively participate in audit.
28. To work with the Clinical Management Group (CMG) team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
29. To provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care and for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical practice.
30. To work closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies to deliver the objectives of the Department and CMG.
31. To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported in a timely manner.
32. To participate in yearly appraisal and job planning process.
33. To undertake Mandatory & Statutory training as determined by the Trust and CMG.
34. To support allied health professionals in their development and teaching.
35. To Support the Nursing team in development and training.
36. To provide a minimum of 1 session a week in the emergency eye department.
