Increasing prices, stagnant wages, high rents, and insufficient housing stock have put homeownership out of reach for too many. Gen H is a mortgage lender redesigning the homebuying process to make it simple, transparent and fair. The challenge is huge, and we’re looking for people passionate about delivering fantastic customer outcomes and helping the dream of homeownership become real. Working with Gen H means proactively embracing new challenges and being comfortable working with deadlines. We communicate honestly and thrive in a humble, low-ego environment.
Backed by leading institutional investors and a growing team, Gen H is set for an exceptional 2025. If you can help us move the dial, we want to hear from you!
We’re seeking a highly skilled and experienced mortgage lending and risk decision-making expert to join our team as a Senior Mortgage Underwriter.
As part of the Gen H Lending Team, you’ll manage mortgage loan applications from submission through to completion, ensuring seamless progression from underwriting to the release of funds. As a senior team member, you’ll mentor and share your expertise with colleagues, including underwriters, Business Development Managers (BDMs) and the wider growth team, and the product team. Your leadership will help foster a culture of continuous improvement, technical and service excellence, and innovation.
What we're looking for
* Seasoned lending decision-maker
You can spot a strong lending application at first glance and identify red flags from a mile away. Inquisitive and analytical, you know when to ask the right questions and make robust, considered lending decisions based on facts, not assumptions. You’ve managed discretionary lending mandates and understand the responsibilities they entail. You’re experienced in handling complex applications, including self-employed incomes, trusts, investment income, guarantors, lending into retirement, and joint borrower sole proprietor (JBSP) arrangements.
* Mortgage Expert
You’ll know your Self-Assessment from your company accounts, your red book from your AVM, and your UK Finance Mortgage Lender’s handbook from your standard offer condition. You’ll be needed to take an application from initial enquiry all the way to completion, and so having a deep understanding of the mortgage process, the actors involved and the parts they play, and the regulations under which we are governed will make sure you’re set up for success at Gen H.
* Great communicator and relationship builder
You’ll engage with customers, intermediaries, and suppliers across multiple channels, so your verbal and written communication skills need to be exceptional.
* Advocate for change
As a growing and evolving organisation, change is a constant at Gen H. You’re comfortable with ambiguity, can adapt quickly to new processes, and thrive in a dynamic environment.
You’re committed to fostering professional growth and sharing knowledge across the business, proactively supporting colleagues' development.
Your mission
Act as the first line of defence for credit risk management
* Make lending decisions that align with Gen H’s risk appetite, policy requirements, and underwriting guidelines, within your mandated authority.

* Assess mortgage applications accurately, verifying income, employment, credit history, and property-related information using the correct documentation and data.
* Exercise discretion when recommending or approving lending policy exceptions.
* Maintain accurate, audit-ready system records of underwriting decisions and their supporting rationale.
Deliver seamless experiences
* Communicate effectively with stakeholders to gather information, relay decisions, and maintain clear records.
* Manage a portfolio of applications, prioritising tasks and balancing competing deadlines.
* Consistently meet turnaround targets while delivering high-quality work.
Constantly pursue excellence
* Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, or enhance underwriting processes while maintaining quality standards.
* Stay informed about industry trends, regulations, and best practices to ensure compliance and maintain expertise.
* Actively seek training and development opportunities to enhance your skills.
Inspire and support others
* Mentor and develop underwriters and colleagues, sharing expertise and fostering a culture of excellence.
* Design and deliver training sessions tailored to the team’s needs.
* Collaborate with management to develop mentoring and training initiatives aligned with organisational goals.
