Job Description
In addition to the responsibilities of a Principal Engineer, the Electrical Engineering Supervisor will lead, oversee, and manage a team of engineers, technicians, and/or designers, as assigned to the electrical team, in the design, development, testing, and support of electrical systems, projects, or tasks. The engineering supervisor will report directly to the Manager of Electrical Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
1. Safety Leadership:
1. Be a safety leader for your team and ensure that each person leaves in the condition they came in.
2. Ensure all safety trainings are completed on time.
2. Project Execution:
1. Responsible for all engineering products, in your area of responsibility, produced by the electrical engineering team.
2. Provide project oversight to projects being worked by the team both internal and external.
3. Engineering Management:
1. Lead efforts, including electrical engineering and associated instrumentation development across multiple programs.
2. Set appropriate team expectations for completion of goals.
3. Ensure accountability of task and goal completion.
4. Manage engineering processes to ensure that quality, schedule, and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
5. Perform supervisory and administrative duties including resource management, employee development, safety, performance evaluations, statusing, progressing work, assist with hiring, honoring labor contracts, and employee time verification.
4. Training and Development:
1. Provide technical training, guidance, and leadership to assigned personnel.
2. Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions for engineering processes.
3. Provide onboarding and mentor plans for new engineers entering the team.
5. Team Collaboration and Communication:
1. Ensure proper communication among the team and with other groups both internal and external.
2. Facilitate communication between Engineers and Designers to ensure successful engineering and design processes.
3. Interface with and support Design, Engineering, Program Office, Systems Integration and Concept Design Development, Change Management, Estimating, Contracts, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy, and other customer organizations as required.
6. Continuous Improvement:
1. Ensure proper up-to-date process documentation for all electrical engineering processes.
2. Focus on Lean Six Sigma principles to both remove waste and variation from processes.
3. Create plans for recurring review of processes for areas of improvement and conduct projects to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and reduce cycle times.
Required/Preferred Education/Training
* BS degree in Engineering required, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or Computer Science preferred.
* MS degree in Engineering or P.E. preferred.
* Working knowledge of the following discipline(s) is(are) required: Power, Controls Engineering.
Required/Preferred Experience
* Minimum 8 years of technical engineering experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine engineering experience is relevant.
* 3 years of technical supervisory/project lead experience required, including demonstrated technical/project management skills.
* Ability to lead, motivate and inspire teams of engineers.
* Understands the elements of ship design.
* Demonstrated familiarity with state-of-the-art graphical and analytical tools.
* Excellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written.
* Positive relationship and reputation with U.S. Navy customer.
* Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
* Broad knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g. Naval Ship Specs., ABS, IEEE).
