Job Description
We are looking for a full-time Platforms Engineer to join us here at UWE to provide 3rd line technical expertise in supporting and maintaining the Universitys platforms, including both on-premises systems and the preferred cloud-hosted environment, Microsoft Azure. This role focuses on assisting with the management and optimisation of ITS platforms, with an emphasis on Microsoft and Linux-based services and projects. The key objectives are to contribute to the reliability, security, scalability, and performance of the Universitys platforms while supporting innovation and the delivery of strategic goals.
We offer a competitive salary, a great working environment and up-to-date training and development. We are currently working in a hybrid model, so we need you on-site once or twice a week and occasionally for maintenance activities, workshops, etc.
We manage systems and services in a hybrid setup, with approximately 650 virtual machines (VMs) on-premises and around 50 applications running in Azure IaaS/PaaS, which is expected to grow significantly in the future. The operations function supports a digitally agile, technologically relevant, and fully enabled teaching environment for students, staff, and other partners.
About you
The successful candidate will have Hands-on experience with several of the following technologies:
* Virtualisation Platforms: VMware, Hyper-V and other virtualisation technologies.
* Operating Systems: Proficiency in Windows (Windows 2016 and above) and/or Unix-based systems (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS/RedHat), including server lifecycle management.
* Microsoft 365 Suite: Teams, Exchange, Purview, and Identity & Access Management.
* Contact Centre Systems: Managing telephony/contact centre solutions and supporting key business activities, such as Clearing.
* Automation & Scripting: g., Ansible, Puppet, PowerShell, Bash, Python.
* Open-source Middleware:g., Apache, Java, Tomcat, MySQL.
A good understanding of the fundamentals of Azure, Storage/Volume Managers (SAN/NAS/NFS/LVM/ZFS), and Networking (DNS, IPAM, load balancers).
